8-10K gold piece value magic item for a mage

The entry for force shield notes it works just as a normal (large) shield does, granting a +2 AC. Perhaps an individual with mage armor gains no benefit from using a large wooden shield then?
This is correct. A shield provides an armor bonus, and Mage Armor provides an armor bonus. Since they're the same type of bonus, they overlap.

The special exception is that the armor bonus from one shield stacks with that from one suit of armor. Neither the Mage Armor spell nor the bracers counts as a "suit of armor," therefore they still don't stack with a shield.

This is in the FAQ (MainFAQv12102002.pdf, p25).

Note that even though the ring of force shield is based off the Wall of Force spell, it does not provide cover or block line of effect. Someone using the ring can still be targeted by spells normally. The only benefit he gets is that +2 to AC.

That gets your item's total value down to 12,800. Much closer to what you're looking for.

I gave the item out on Wednesday, but I tuned the item down a bit.

I removed the Magic missile option and made the fireball option flame arrow, which is a weaker spell at a 5th level caster level.

This is what it's final (for me) version is:

Shell Necklace-

The shell necklace is a finely woven silver collar that contains 20 shells. The collar itself confers the following abilities:

+2 insight Bonus to AC
Comprehend Languages @ 5th level 1/day

There are 2 sets of ten different types of shells, as well. These shells can be read as read like scrolls as a standard action. The two sets are:

Flame arrow @5th level
Quickened True Strike

I did get made fun of for having such a lame name!

Right, well shucks. If there's a fellow carrying around a tiny wall of force on their arm I'd think I would allow them to add the +2 AC bonus to their touch/ranged touch AC vs spells. Heck, would actually make the ring a bit more useful.

I understand why the rules work the way they do in this situation but the ring of force, though it acts like one, it is not a normal shield. The ring of force could potentially block a spell, unlike a norml shield. Though I suppose one could argue that it isn't actually a true wall of force...am I just totally off-the-wall here?

Hmmmm, otherwise it's a perfectly nice ring and shield for arcane spellcasters :D
