8-10K gold piece value magic item for a mage

Stone of Good Luck (10k) is a very useful item that won't get out of hand. Mostly it is defensive in combat.

If this PC has a lot of skills (many wizards do) he will get a lot of mileage out of the item. It also tends to encourage diversifying in skills a bit.

Kiira

dude i would give them a "kiira" from magic of faerun
is a head slot (but you could change that) that gives +1 to knowlege skills and acts as a as a spell book. the history of thei item is that it is an elven "lore gem" that is used to hold magical and regular knowledege.

I would like something with multiple abilities but not unbalancing.

I would suggest looking into a Rod of Wonder. It may be worth a little more than you were planning to give (12000 GP), but I don't think it would be unbalancing. It gives the player a lot of abilities, he just doesn't know which one will happen any time he uses it ;) Just good old fashioned fun with dice.

Of course, it would probably work best if the player in question was chaotic, which I have a feeling he isn't from the description. Still, I think it would make a good reward. I believe it would greatly aid a character who is struggling in combat without giving them an overwhelming advantage.

How about a ring of force shield at 8,500g? Since it's a mini wall of force the shield bonus conferred might be added to the touch AC vs spells. A wand of magic missle, better yet, fireballs for that would-be diviner.

As DMs at times some of these magic items can seem lame/boring or some such (heh, WE'RE used to them), but players tend to leap with glee and dance themselves silly over the most minor of marvels. I wouldn't discount your custom magic item there trentonjoe. Heck, I had a group of 5th level PCs that were tickled pink upon discovering a length of magic rope. :p

Here's a wonderous item I recently created for my campaign...

Murrdox, I don't want this item to go by without a compliment -- it's a very cool item, and the idea of balancing an item's value by requiring constant monetary input is very interesting.

One suggestion: it seems a little unrealistic to me to feed three hundred coins through a slot in six seconds. Perhaps the item can absorb gold through its surfaces? That way, you could "dunk" the item into a coin pouch full of gold and absorb all the necessary gold, or you could pour gold on one of the faces and watch it sink into the item. This seems a more efficient means of recharging the item.

If you stay with the slot, I think I'd rule that you can feed a maximum of 100 coins into the item per minute.
Otherwise, very cool -- especially the hummingbirds!

Thanks very much for the comment!

As for how much gold can be deposited in the cube per round, I sort of assume that there is a subtle magic at work which "guides" coins into the slot when you pour an amount of coins at the slot.

Even with the feeding mechanism in place, perhaps I should change it so that only 100 coins can be fed into it as a ful-round action.

That makes more sense -- I was imagining myself at a vending machine, feeding quarters in one at a time and muttering, "Dammit!" when I drop a handful of coins on the ground. :D

ha ha ha!

Yes, that would be quite frustrating... imagining a wizard sitting on the ground with a bag of coins and the cube, shoving coins in the slot one at a time for 10 minutes... that's amusing. ;)

That's not correct. The ring grants an armor bonus, which does not help against touch attacks. What's more, it's seldom useful for mages, since it does not stack with the bonus from Mage Armor or bracers of armor.

What about a necklace that provides:

a +2 insight bonus to AC....

You're already over your limit. According to WotC, an insight bonus to AC is just as expensive as a luck bonus (grrrr  - private joke - some people will get it). A +2 insight bonus to AC would run 10,000 gp alone.
