8 hours of uninterupted rest

How is this played by most.
If a mage gets up to go to the toilet and casts light do we start 8 hours again.

What about conditions where every 4-6 hours there are small raids made on a sleeping party?

I can see that if a mage casts a lot of there remaining spells they should possibly need extra rest. 10min/spell level?

What do you all play?

Sort of on the same topic, and I know that I should know this [dips head shamefully], but can someone point me to the relevant sections of the books/srd that explain sleep/rest? I was playing in a game last night and the question arose of whether or not you could get by with 4 hours of sleep, you know, for sleeping in periods while the rest of your party takes watch.

COME ON SOMEONE!!!

I think this is important.

Given a tough rulling on this point mages could go days witout meeting the criteria for 8 hours uninterupted rest

We play it by the rules.

A fighter only getting 4 hours of rest doesn't suffer any ill effects. The divine casters need 1 hour to pray and the arcane casters whine and want to sit around longer.

Well I don't count getting up to go to the bathroom as an interuption. I think the intent of the rule is any outside interuption that wakes you stops the 8 hour process and you need to start over. Personally I try to tie it to some logical process. For me its any interuption that fully wakes you. It is a case by case ruling, but combat every time, lesser things a judgement call. If somone wakes you and says I think I heard something, oh wait it was just a cat, that probably isn't enough to fully wake you and interupt the 8 hours.

There is not such thing as "going to the bathroom" in my games, as none of these bodily functions exhist. Why? Cause that's the last thing that I wanna roleplay! ;)

I gave you the relevant quote already. Please read it.

kreynolds: to the best of my knowledge, there are no rules in 3E about how much sleep characters need before suppering penalties. There are the conditions "fatigued" and "exhausted", rules for wizards resting befroe preparation, and sleeping in armor - but nothing else I know of.

read it thanks!

..... but don't like it......maybe its house rule time.

I don't like the ambiquity between rest/sleep/memorization.

A char wakes in the middle of the night to find herself in the middle of a free for all. Casts heaps of spells.
This is surely a lot worse than a simply spell or two.

I appreciate the comments on leaving it to a case by case ruleing and I will go with that. (I think my PC's will not like that). It will match life though.

I may throw in a con check for 2 hours extra rest in the case of heavy battels. 8 hours if they roll a 1.

Thanks everone.

My group has always been pretty lax about this. Basically, the wizard needs a full night's rest to memorize their spells. So, did the party sleep? Ok, the wizards got their spells back. Even if the party is attacked halfway through the night, the wizards still only need to rest an extra hour, so I really don't see the need to worry about it.
