8 hours of uninterupted rest

My group has always been pretty lax about this. Basically, the wizard needs a full night's rest to memorize their spells. So, did the party sleep? Ok, the wizards got their spells back. Even if the party is attacked halfway through the night, the wizards still only need to rest an extra hour, so I really don't see the need to worry about it.

Of course, they cannot recover any spell slots used within the last 8 hours.

As far as I know the mage needs 8 hours of rest/light activity.

So if there is a raid on the camp and the mage does nothing no problem.
And the same goes for keeping watch. He just sits and watches so no heavy activity.

It seems like quoting the rule might help:

Rest: To prepare her daily spells, a wizard must have a clear mind. To clear her mind, the wizard must first sleep for 8 hours. The character does not have to slumber for every minute of the time, but she must refrain from movement, combat, spellcasting, skill use, conversation, or any other fairly demanding physical or mental task during the rest period. If the wizard's rest is interrupted, each interruption adds 1 hour to the total amount of time she has to rest in order to clear her mind, and the wizard must have at least 1 hour of rest immediately prior to preparing her spells. If the character does not need to sleep for some reason, she still must have 8 hours of restful calm before preparing any spells.

Pretty much everything is answered right there.

There you go. I might quibble with what they consider fairly demanding physical or mental tasks, like conversation. Sure debates are demanding mental tasks, chatting in general sleeppy mode isn't demanding.

Then again I have similar problems with the item creation spell research rules. You can't cast any spells, get involved in any fight, use magic items. Yeah pimp slapping a beggar(lv 1 commoner) really took a lot out of a 20th level cleric, it probably took less out of him than over eating those MLT's.

It's easier and better for game mechanics to be in absolutes. DMs can then decide if the absolute needs to be bent or broken according to the circumstances in their game.

I disagree I think broader less absolute rules for many things are better since they allow a larger range of rulings, that are still seen as official for those who care about keeping games official. Then again I don't care about keeping things official so its a moot point, and just me being argumenative.

That's funny. You're describing 2nd Edition to the T. I think there's a good reason they ditched it. Then again, that's just my opinion...I could be wrong. :)

Well basicly if they are only interrupted for a litle raid, and then go back to sleep i let them get their spells...

I'm more or less enforcing the rule that if they rest 6-8 hours they can get their spells/spell slots back.

I'm toying with the idea of just how much you get back.
After X of sleep this happens
30 min = 0 level is refreshed
1 Hour = 1 level is refreshed
2 Hour = 2 level is refreshed
3 Hour = 3 level is refreshed
4 Hour = 4 level is refreshed
5 Hour = 5 level is refreshed
6 Hour = 6 level is refreshed
7 Hour = 7 level is refreshed
8 Hour = 8 level and above is refreshed
And if you spend more than 6 hours between sleeping the refresh starts over. So if someone raids the camp after 5 hours of sleep, and the party the follow up doing something for 7 hours, then settle down again to rest, then spells are refreshed from 0 level again.
