8 Things About Monte Cook's New RPG

Morrus

Well, that was fun

Since dramatically leaving the D&D Next team earlier in the year, Monte Cook has been involved with a number of projects - including a video web-series called Geekseekers, the Marvel Comics MMO, and a new RPG of his own. He's posted a number of tidbits about this new game over the past few weeks:
  1. Monte will be launching a Kickstarter campaign for it sometime next month.
  2. He'll be announcing the game and providing details sometime next week.
  3. It's not d20 or Pathfinder compatible. It's something new.
  4. It has an inbuilt setting which includes the Pipe City of Dru.
  5. He classifies it as "science fantasy" and it takes place in a far, far future post-apocalyptic setting.
  6. It has "upside down cities, ships that sail across solidified oceans, creatures that exist on more than one level of reality at a time."
  7. It's simpler than D&D 3.5, but still complex enough to feel "robust".
  8. It will not be published under his Malhavoc Press label.
Yuu can read more about Monte's various projects here.

I do wonder what will come out of it. It's like the untimely demise of 4E caused a whole outcrop of new tabletop games.

Also, "Yuu" can read? Is it a typo, or are we informed that some Chinese guy got past the Great Firewall of China?

Yeah me too, I wonder why he is not using Malhavoc? I guess that will be a 3.5 imprint and a new one for different games?

It's very specifically NOT 3.5 (d20 etc). At least, that's what he says. I'm not sure why that means it should not be a Malhavoc product, unless there are ownership issues with that label. But I'm not privy to such things.

Monte mentioned the reasons somewhat in a recent episode of Fear the Boot.

From what I remember, I believe it deals partially with the idea that Malhavoc Press is known widely for its d20 products. Since this isn't d20, he wanted it under a different imprint. Secondly, I think he may be considering using his own name since it carries more name recognition than Malhavoc Press. Something to that effect, at least.

I want to say the discussion on this topic was towards the end of that episode.

Real reason to do anything as a separate company is so the profit or loss is kept separate from the other business. This can be useful to creative accountants.

Numerous other reasons exist too. This way the new game and new company could be sold as a unit if a buyer was interested.

 Oh, come on...we all know it is about movie rights! :D
