9th level (ECL) Human Half-Fiend Character

As Dragonnety said, if you enjoy the character, don't let us discourage you.

Especially if your DM is aware of the disparity, he(or she) may actually include things that bring your characters particular advantages to the fore, due to your LA penalty making your char possibly less efficient.

I forget if the +4 CL from the Practiced Spellcaster feat is limited by HD or ECL, but if it only lets you have a CL of up to your HD, I would try my hardest to lobby the DM for a houserule. Being behind two spell levels is bad enough. Having a 4 point disadvantage on beating SR and winning a CL check for dispelling makes casting in those situations damn near futile. I know the Assay Spell Resistance spell can alleviate the former issue, but it's level 4 and only good for one creature for one combat. It's far too expensive to prepare enough times to cover you on offensive spells. IMHO, spending two feats on Spell Penetration and Greater Spell Penetration, when you're already starting w/ two less feats than a level 9 human is an even bigger waste.

So...if you can't get PS feat, you can basically count out dispelling and offensive casting from your available roles. You'll be mostly buffing and healing.

Also, just noticed, if I understand how pricing a magic item works, your scythe is far too cheap.

Scythe base cost is 18 GP. Add 300 for masterwork, then 2,000 for +1. Keen counts as another +1 pricewise, so that in and of itself would cost 8,000. Total cost: 10,318 GP for a +1 Keen Scythe.

Unless of course, I am misunderstanding how the SRD is explaining the costs, in which case I learn something. (And feel a bit happier about the pricing of magic items, but then again I can be greedy sometimes... lol)

+2 weapon (+1 and Keen) = 2*2*1000 = 8000 + 300 + 18 = 8318 gp, not 10k.

I would suggest a weapon with reach. perhaps a glaive. but i agree that a half-fiend cleric of Nerul with scythe is a walking intimidate check (plus it looks cool).

Thanks for all you advices and encouragements!

I guess I'll give it a try as i got really good rolls that might compensate the lack of class levels. I am going to play this character more trickery (as his domain) like with stealth and silence, disguise and bluff actions. This one is not meant to be a main caster but should use his spells for buffs and tactic advantages. Although this character never will be a fearsome specialist, he is a secondary caster buffer healer, secondary stealth / skill character and secondary melee (although his HP are bad, i guess his AC is ok and trip might be a good tactic aswell: A belt of growth or potion of enlarge could be usefull ==> better tripping and reach).

And yes some magic items i listed arent priced correct yet, but won't exceed the total characer wealth of 36.000 GP (is that actually right at ECL 9?)

I will ask about level reduction aswell, thanks for the tipp.

Next feat I am going to select hover or improved flight (has improved flight any disadvantages over hover when haven average maneuverability?) and some enlarge person item for hover, trip and reach!

Playing in a party with lots of stealthy players the racial darkness spell might be usefull I guess.

If you are interested i will post how this little fiend will do ...

As i most likely will keep core build i still appreciate any suggestions on how improve his skills (melee/trip, trickery tactics (get in and out combat, usage of his fly ability plus of course good set of spells for secondary casting (buff and tactic advantages) ..

Sneak attack trip. I believe if you trip them while they are denied their dex bonus to AC (or you successfully feinted prior to the trip) the bonus granted attack would be a sneak attack, which could be devastating if you lucked out and crit too.

Except it won't work for you because enlarge person only affects humanoid Creature type, where as a half fiend you are an Outsider. Pretty much any spell named *Blank* Person wont affect you. Spells named *Blank* Monster will affect you normally.

Creating A Half-Fiend...
Size and Type
The creature’s type changes to outsider. Do not recalculate Hit Dice, base attack bonus, or saves. Size is unchanged. Half-fiends are normally native outsiders.
Playing in a party with lots of stealthy players the racial darkness spell might be useful I guess.
it is also useful to prevent sneak attack.

A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach.
