A bad fight

Tinker Gnome

Adventurer
Man, in my last game I was a Gnome Rogue and my brother was an Elven ranger, but that is not the crux of the matter. I never hit anything during that battle and I just kept getting hit. My highest roll on the dice was a 7, where as my brother must have rolled like 5 nat 20s. The thing is, his dice always do this, and mine always roll low. I just rolled them and I got 4, 4, and a 6. Oddly enogh, my dice roll 4 more than any other number.

heh, I am just complaining. :)

Kill him and take his dice.

I roll a bit better on his. He is not coming home the next couple of weekends from College so I will be able to use his. But even when using his, I still roll low more often than he does.

We have an unlucky spot at the place we play! One corner of the couch seems to be jinxed. It has only been recently when one of the new members of the group started sitting there that it seemed someone could actually roll decent while sitting there.

We had a player who all of us thought seriously had a jinx. So we actually started recording every dice roll they made. After about 60 or 70 rolls, we noted there was no jinx at all...they had failed some key rolls in the past but stastically was rollling just like they should.

There is a Player in my group who rarely gets less than a 20 (including modifiers). [All rolls are in the open, and there is no suspision of cheating, here.] She never fails a save, never fails to hit, always gets great Spot and/or Listen checks, etc.

In one battle, the enemy cleric specifically went after this Player's sorcerer (was a rematch battle) with 4 hold person spells. She made all 4 saves.

In another game, she was playing an archer. From levels 1st to 3rd (as far as we got) she never missed an attack roll. Never.

Her luck with dice is absolutely amazing to me. Absolutely amazing.

I play with a guy like this as well, except for the no suspicion of cheating part. Well, I suppose technically there's no suspicion of cheating with my guy either, since we don't suspect, we know. :p

Like most players I suspect, I run hot and cold. In a previous game my paladin couldn't miss. Last game, however, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. We were fighting a Horned Devil, and every round I would attempt to Smite with my first attack (+6 to attack, +12 to damage). And three out of four rounds, I rolled under five on my attack roll and wasted the Smite. :( It was a harsh combat. Even worse when, with a +20 Fortitude save, I rolled a 2 on my save vs. stun, and got stunned for 4 rounds shortly thereafter.

There is one player in my group who has what all of us call "bipolar dice". On numerous occasions we have all witnessed him roll multiple 19-20's followed by multiple 1-2's. Near as we can tell he comes out statistically average, its just that he alwys seems to roll above 15 and below 5, never in the middle. I recall one time, in that game we were all about 2nd level at the time and the GM set up a fight between this guy and a sourcebook NPC who was about 8th level. The NPC was supposed to smack this guy around a bit as a lesson in humility, or something like that. Well, our hero wins initative and rolls 20-20-20 on his first attack. Bam! Instakill. One dead sourcebook NPC. And then later he gets tossed out of an airplane becaue he failed a Fort save vs a stun gun.

As for myself; I have really good luck when rolling stats, but only fair-to-middling luck when rolling in combat. I can't recall the last time I rolled a nat 20 for an attack roll.

Of course, when I GM I tend to roll more crits. But I also use a different set of dice for GMing. *shrug*

That's nothing like the guy in my group. Random numbers really like him. He rolls openly on my dice and gets 20s or 19s almost all the time. If I'm using a random number generator, woe to those who oppose him because even on my own random number generators, if he presses the button to roll, it will be a 20 for the attack roll. He once got something around 18 critical hits in a row with his axe--not all of his rolls were 20 on that generator; just the ones that mattered. He put his powers to good use though when he entered me for the GM's Day Contest and was randomly selected to win all the ENPublishing PDFs :)
