A Book on Philosophies

I'm A Banana

Potassium-Rich
Anybody interested in doing one of these?

As a previous PS-er, I long for the days when my 3e characters can define themselves not just in terms of religion, but in terms of true belief....think of all the whacked-out philosophical and religious systems that could be used by D&D characters, NPC's, and Organizations!

I was kinda inspired by this idea with the side-bar about the Academy in the Olympians section of Deities and Demigods....and I think I want to do stuff with it...expand on it....link feats, PrC's, items, adventures, etc. to it....

So I'd like to play a PC who belongs to an organization that beleives that true enlightenment is at the bottom of a beer stien, or that beleives that they know the absolute truth, but if they tell it to anyone it could damn their souls for eternity if they don't accept it, so they keep it to themselves. I want a PC who can gain some sort of mechanical benefit from the energy of his belief, like clerics, but seperate from it.

So I'm thinking of writing stuff up myself...but if someone's putting out a book of it sometime soon, I'd go about buying that instead....save me the work of charity-writing. ^_^

I dunno....just a random idea that I'm surprised hasn't been capitalized on yet. If worst comes to worst, I'm sure that the ps3e people or the pw.com people would be interested...so my idea probably won't go totally to waste, even if no one is putting out a book for it. ^_^

Call is "Philosophies and Frauds" or "Thought Clubs" or even "Belief."

So....anybody? Anybody already have something like that? Anybody think it's a good idea? Anybody want to use my stupendous writing skills to make the product for them? ;)

Just Curious,
-JD

LOL, the titles are the best part of the post. :D

I like the idea and would like to see more things like this. Very creative and orginal.

I see a trend toward less crunchy material and more flavor, like what you describe. Hopefully some company's doing this/will do this - it sounds good.

(Tried to reply earlier today, but it was lost in the bogging-down of the boards...)

Sounds like you might be interested in TOUCHED BY THE GODS, a book we published last year. Here's the basic info on it:

http://www.atlas-games.com/product_tables/AG3204.html

There are lots of reviews of the book around as well (just check the database). As it happens, we're right now selling some slightly damaged copies at $12 each on our website, but the book is also widely available. (I'd suggest patronizing your local game store, where you can also leaf through the book and see if it catches your fancy.)

That's an idea that definitely sounds like it could be very worthwhile if done right. If you are a good writer, we might be interested in working with you, and would be able to help provide things like publicity, art, and pdfing. email me if you're interested.

Hey no fair...
Dark Quest has been working on a series of products that may perk your interest there. Look forward to the public announcement on the line within the next two weeks.

And now that I can get into the boards, I can see what people are saying. ^_^

Poor Morrus...feel a bit sorry for him, having to organize all this...

Anyhoo...wow. :)

I consider myself not too bad of a writer (and those with impartial opinons are inclined to agree ;)), and I guess if you want to see other stuff I've done take a look at PS3E.com, where I'm a Resident Expert (sounds so illustrious!) for Paths of Power. There's some stuff over there, and some other random stuff I've written.

So...yeah...Touched by the Gods isn't too shabby, but I kinda want a toolbox design, too...and a bit more than just a book on organizations...and I'll definately be looking for any other books on this that are coming out. What can I say, the PSer in me won't let it go. ^_^

I guess since people are interested, I'll e-mail Gareth and John and see what people would like to do with this.

Of course, initial credit must go to Planescape...darn inspirational setting increasing my workload! I love it! :)

I'll be looking forward to whatever Dark Quest is putting out, and I may get Touched by the Gods at some point (I'll scope out a few reviews and stuff to see if it really is right for me), and I'll e-mail the guys who might want to pick this up. Neat, I could be a pro!
:D

Having spent 7 years getting a degree in philosophy I think my head would explode if I actually tried to put my training into a coherent format as it relates to characters. Putting information on philosophical guidelines for others to read would be a formidable task, imho. However the idea does have its merits as I know that my characters tend to have a unique perspective on life, the universe and everything due to what I've learned. I've had a very Machiavellian dwarven fighter and am now working on integrating Nietzsche into my sorcerer/paladin's mindset. I think it would be great to play in a group that had characters that had some substance behind their beliefs, not necessarily religious as religion rarely explains character motivations.
