A Brief Complaint About "Helpful" Responses

airwalkrr

Adventurer
I post here in the House Rules forum quite a bit because I like discussing house rules and looking for ways to make the game better for me and my group. Lately, I have been hearing a lot of people reply to my suggestions with things like "tweaking the game messes up more stuff that you have to tweak so don't do it." These kind of replies do not help me. I post here because I KNOW that tweaks will impact other areas of the game and I want feedback to help me realize areas I haven't considered.

Honestly, I would suggest that if you have the kind of opinion that is discouraging for any adjustments to the RAW for you to simply avoid the House Rule forum. It doesn't help me at all to hear "that won't work so don't do it." I would much more appreciate constructive criticism (which I do receive from some of you, thank you) on ways to improve my idea or alternatives to my idea rather than telling me to stick with RAW because it's better than anything I could come up with. Thank you. [/rant]

I'm amazed by how personal and how rude that other thread has become. I hope you don't think that this kind of response is typical.

That said, an idea really can have too many repercussions to be worth the effort. This is especially likely when a system changed completely between 2E and 3E, and someone proposes bringing back just one of the old ways. More often than not, it just doesn't work in isolation, and not everyone here will share the nostalgia.

I've had people tell me that some of my ideas create too many problems, and I've warned other people that their suggestions won't mix well with the rest of the game. It's reasonable to ask what the specific problems are, but I don't agree that no one should point out this flaw where it exists.

I have to agree with Lorehead, which, since he is regarded so highly, seems like a cop out...hehe. I have responded to the aforementioned thread but I hope my response could be considered constructive. Anyway, I hope in the future that you find more people helpful and less argumentative. I've been reading posts here for years but just recently started posting.

BTW, if either of you have a chance could you take a gander at the stigmatist class I posted and give me some feedback. I know I'm kind of threadpimping but I'm impatient and needy at heart. Seriously though, everyone gets thier hackles up sometimes but I hope you have better luck in the future.

I think that when you are asking for help with something, a vali response may also include "Don't". Some of the responses may be that they have tried it in the past, or they have mapped it out and the required changes would be ridiculous.

I will try to help when I look, but sometimes the answer is 'It's not worth the trouble'

:)

When opening a can a worms, expect a few hooks. When they show up...dont step on them and expect not to get poked. And dont expect them not to hurt when you try to pull them out after you put them there.

I think that this is a very important point. The house rules forum is FOR thinking about new rules. Constructive criticism and helpful ideas are always wanted, but posts to a thread in house rules that say "just don't do it" or something similar are basically threadcrapping and are both unwarranted and unwanted.

Sure, if you've already tried an idea yourself and you want to share some of the shortcomings that you found, that is fine... but even that can be phrased in personal terms ("I found that") rather than absolutist terms ("it never works"), which helps to take the discussion forward rather than start arguments.

Cheers

I definitly did not order hooks with my worms!! :p

But seriously, airwalkrr, I have noticed of late that what with all the new members signing up (well, all the ones we lost in the crash, really) that there have been a plethora of responses like that. One of my threads degenerated into a crapfest because of that, and I thought the idea had merit :\

I think people need to realise that the House Rules forum is basically the place to leave you preconceptions of D&D at the door. RAW has only the slightest of holds here, what with some of the ideas spawned here (luckily no Fashan were seen  ). There is literally somethign for everyone.
