Did anyone else pick up on the joke in the material component for Detect Thoughts?

No, sadly, that stuff is too easily ignored in the age of component pouches and other spell foci. They are the next item on my list to get chucked, but I'll need to think about the ramifications for a little while yet.

I haven't payed close attention for a long time, but I remember 2nd ed was *full* of these.

I also like the nut shells for Confusion. But we dont use really use components - they dont feel magical to us - so it doesn't come up in play, even though it is fun to seem them in a read through.

That's been the material component since 1e. There are lots of others that are equally cute.

I give credit to Gygax (and his players?) for coming up with fun material components. It made the 1e PHB an enjoyable read.
