A Couple More KotS Questions

I'd like to ask another question, too.

The fighter classfeature "Combat Challenge" is not 100% clear to me.

"Every time you attack a creature, ..., you can mark that target."
In which cases can i mark how many creatures:

I get an opportunity attack. I can use my melee basic attack.
Can i mark the target?

I get an additional attack from a friendly teammates ability.
Can i mark the target?

I use the fighter attack "Cleave".
Can i mark the adjacent enemy that got 3 dmg, too?

I was born smart, and gained a multiclass feat to tap into the wizards power arsenal. I chose an area attack. (Same question arises, when i am a dragonborn fighter using his breath.) It reads " Targets: All creatures in area", but it seems really powerfull.
Can i mark all targets i hit with my area attack?

From a balance standpoint, i can guess what the answer is, but i really want my players to survive at least a few fights in the keep. I can crush them easy enough if i ever want to :).

Yes, yes, no (you didn't attack that creature), and yes. Unless they errata/FAQ it otherwise.

This could be a very dangerous tactic. If said fighter managed to somehow catch every enemy in the attack (not very likely with the standard dragonborn breath ability or Scorching Burst, but for the sake of argument) then 5+ enemies are now focused on the fighter. While he will be technically filling his role, depending on the enemies he may only be filling it for about a round or so.

What is more likely is that the fighter will catch 2-3 enemies at most in the area attack, in which case he's likely to be hurting but doing a great job of freeing up the rest of the group to take down the enemies.

Thank you. I guess i will be playing like that, even though that will make my player sad being neither a secondary wizard nor a dragonborn.

Well, let's not forget that there's nothing saying that the marked foe HAS to attack the fighter. They can still attack someone else at -2, which isn't so bad. It's not like having the holy bug zapper come after you with the paladin challenge.

And really, if it were that easy for all the enemies to swarm over and kill the fighter, they probably would've done so whether or they got marked. Unless there was something even worse for the party that they could've done, in which case the fighter is making a noble sacrifice by marking them all!

Very true, and with an area attack like that the fighter is far less likely to be able to lock all of his marked enemies in place. However, it does provide some incentive to still whack on the fighter over other targets. Not much, depending on the role and attack bonus of the enemy (I would imagine an artillery creature with decent accuracy is going to be going for the strikers regardless), but something to think about. "The nail that sticks out," and all that.
