A d20 NPC Wiki?

I've edited the no-copying notice to read:

"First of all, do not simply copy NPCs from published sources - including the [http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/brief.html System Reference Document]! This Wiki is only intended for fan material - while NPCs and monsters 'derived' from the SRD and other sources are not a problem, actual copying from the SRD or other sources might be objected to by Wizards of the Coast or the copyright holder - this fan site does not use the WotC Open Gaming Licence, since Wikicities uses a different Open Licence - and is thus not permitted. (Edit by Simon Newman)"

If you're copying something from an OGL source you again don't have a copyright (you would if you published under the OGL, but you can't publish under both the OGL and the GFDL).
Technically wrong. Copyrights always remain in the hands of the original creators of the work, or to whom the creator sells the copyrights to. Even when reprinting OGC material, the material is still copyrighted to the original author. Just look at any Section 15 of an OGL that uses OGC from other sources, and you will see what I mean. The OGL states that it is all right to use someone else's copyrighted work, with permission, so long as the OGL is adhered to.

That said, I had no intention of expecting such a site to operate without obtaining permissions from source. For the d20 Modern NPCs I had wanted to print, I already had permissions secured from the publishers. Had I put them up on the site, they would have satisfied both the GDFL and the OGL.

Oh well. I was interested in this idea, up until now. Now I've just got to see if a dual-licensed version of an NPC Wiki would constitue a Wiki "too similar in concept" to the current one.

I've seen some material that might not be "legal". If a third-party company prints a new class, for instance, are we allowed to post an NPC using that class?
If the WIki was operating under an OGL, then I could tell you. Since it's not, you're going to have to consult the the Wizards fansite policy (which Mr. Hubert linked incorrectly).

I'm no fancy big city lawyer (or a lawyer at all), but I wouldn't imagine that, as an example, Green Ronin's fansite policy is dictated by WotC. If you want to use another publisher, you should check out their fansite policy first.

There's a thread with almost a hundred npcs in Rogue's Gallery.

A good start. The Rogues Gallery Forum has thousands of PC/NPC's and it would be a great resource for populating and NPC index. Finding something close to what you are looking for there is impossible there now.

I'm not aware of any 3rd-party publisher whose policy differs significantly from the informal WoTC policy. If you know of any please let me know - simontmn at address postmaster.co.uk

Added a Hobgoblin Soldier (War2), but the site had a wicked slowdown before I could get it entered properly onto all the indexes. I'll do a few more soldiers & archers tonight.

Cheers
Nell.

--OK, fixed the soldier and added the archer.
