Think of the Taliban taking over Afghanistan, at the end of 1979-1996 invasion and civil war period. At first, having non-corrupt, organized, and pious young people to run the place seemed like a really good idea . . .

That's always the story, isn't it. Hitler came to power in the ashes of the failed & weak Weimer Republic, the Communists in Russia because of the failures of the tsars...

Mao in China came to power because of many reasons, but it was because of the chaos following the fall of the last emperor, the short-lived Republic, and then the Japanese invasion and the civil war between the Communists & the Nationalists there. But, it was obviously a period of great chaos in China and Mao brought some semblance of stability.
