A double Forcecage question

Borrowing (ok stealing) an idea from the Pimp My Lich thread, I had a lich confront the party after gating in a balor. That thread did say use Time Stop to gate in the balor, while I did the Time Stop after the balor died.

The party is pretty weakened right now after the balor's death throes, but then the lich cast "Time Stop" and put all but one person in the party in two force cages. The group sorcerer can't do jack about the force cages, as he does not own Disintergrate. However, the psion does. He is inside one force cage, while the melee types of the party are in another. Due to their locations, both force cages are the barred variety.

The cages are about 10 feet apart and not touching.

Would the psion be able to cast "Disintegrate" to hit the other forcecage & release the melee types first? Would the psion's forcecage be considered "cover" for the other?

Thanks

Yes (as he has line of effect through the bars) and Yes (because the Barred version of Forcecage specifies it provides cover, and he's making an attack roll), but he's targeting touch AC on a ... what, Huge? ... immobile object, so even with the Cover, he's only going to be missing on a nat-1 unless he's got attack penalties up the wazoo.

Thanks - I figured the psion could disintegrate the other cube first, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Your BBEG should have done this in an area with water and used control water to drown the party.

Or cast rock to mud on the ceiling over the cages and suffocated them.

Or if he's high enough level cast earthquake to swallow them up.

All of these work best if one of the PCs inside each force cage is affected by insanity and/or dominate person so that they can keep the others busy instead of trying to save themselves! ;) Of for lots of fun, just use Hideous Laughter and then raise the water level -- the victims are not allowed to hold their breath so they begin to drown immediately. Three rounds later and game over!

well, with Time Stop, you can't directly target the PCs with any spell or effect.

That certainly sounds like lots of fun! My "Piano of God" trick has been feeling a smidgen tired.
