I wonder if anyone remembers their first time playing their first D&D game, whatever version it was realistically. It was probably just as convoluted. Any new game, or mechanic in a game, is cumbersome at first.

I do. The first encounter was with goblins, who shot us from outside the range of our torches. Took me down to -6 hp. :p

I remember it well. It was very simple. I played a female elf. I got killed by a gang of skeletons.

Ha.

I soloed Keep on the Borderlands with a half-elf ranger. The DM was new too. Lots of fudging on his part. We had no idea what a Periapt of Proof against Poison actually did (nor did we know what a periapt was).

Still had fun though, and remembered the good stuff.

I have no memory of my first DND experience.

I do however remember dieing once, because the paladin in the party (who was on watch while wounded to 1 hp) fled the incoming centipede without waking us up...

Ah the fun we had with lots of good roleplay in the old editions..

Killed the party with a carrion crawler

To the OP, The observation that a good DM is required, do you mean 4e demands more from a DM than 3e because in general a bad DM pretty much ruins any game.

Thanks for the review, it seems like you really went into it without a lot of venom or angst again the system. I can understand a lot of your concerns, but to be honest this review just got me hyped even more.
