In my game, there are two species of gnome: Forrest Gnome and Mountain Gnomes. Forest Gnomes are more or less exactly as described in the Complete Book of Gnomes... wee folk who take care of the forests, on fairly good terms with elves. Mountain Gnomes are sorta a merchant race, in a way... they do a lot of jewelry work, and fine craftsmanship type stuff with the ore the dwarves mine (Peices for sextants, etc). They are too frail to make the good miners Dwarves do, but they also (By virtue of smaller hands and fingers) make better craftsman... Dwarves do good swords and shields, but chainmail or similar is relegated to gnomes. Gnomes also tend to be the dwarves "portal" to human kind... Dwarves prefer not to leave their mountains, but gnomes have no such hesitancy.

Well, first there's the thing with the race's original habitat:

1 - Dwarves live in and under mountains, clashing with the foul things that threaten them from below. They are forged into a martial race, with extreme sense of devotion to the greater good of dwarvendom. Their opposite number are duergar.

2 - Elves live in forests, protecting the plants and animals from devastation from the careless/evil/shortsighted races that would plunder them. They are a wise race that sees themselves are the caretakers of the world. Their opposite number are drow.

3 - Halflings live wherever they can, then move on. They have to deal with different situations on a daily basis, so learn to make the best out of even the worst-case scenario. Their opposite number are goblins.

4 - Humans live wherever they can, like halfings, but tend to settle once they've tamed the area. They learn to out-think almost any difficulty. Their opposite number are orcs.

5 - Gnomes live in swamps and the hills they surround. They are threatened daily by not only savage creatures, but also by the symbolic corruption of the swamps. They learn to misdirect their foes and cloak themselves with magic. Their opposite number are kobolds.

6 - Half-Orcs live wherever they can, but they have to fight to make a niche for themselves. They learn to be strong and to have a "give no quarter, take none" attitude. Their opposite number are half-elves.

7 - Half-elves live wherever they can, but learn to use wits and charm to make a niche for themselves. At the most basic level, they can weasel themselves into society. Their opposite number are half-orcs.

That's all IMHO, of course. :)

I always wanted to run a game where you had gnomes who specialized in different types of elemental magic. You would have ice gnomes, fire gnomes, earth gnomes, and air (sky) gnomes.

Ice gnomes in the frozen waste of the north/south with a bluish skin tone and white hair, fire gnomes in volcanic regions with jet black skin and bright red hair, earth gnomes with tan skin and brown hair who are the guardians of earth and forest living in burrows and hollowed out trees, and air gnomes (known as "sky gnomes") who are albino and live in cities in the clouds.

Each group would get bonuses to their special element and be more vulnerable to their opposing element.

The gnomes could be the "militant arm" of nature. If something is going to disrupt/destroy the natural order then they are in charge of preventing it.

Think of them as the true guardians of the natural world as elves are too flighty and druids too solitary to handle any large and well organized threat. :)

That is what I always wanted to do with gnomes.

(This entire post IMHO)

Why use *Gnomes* for that? They're stupid! use elves! Elves aren't stupid! Gnomes are!

Gnomes are stupid little guys with huge nozes and wrinkly faces. Elves are gallant, brave, and pretty darn good lookin'. So use elves. They're cool. Gnomes aren't.

Bah. Elves are pansys.

In my campaign, the gnomes occupy the place of the Swiss. They're pretty much neutral with respect to the wars that are devestating the continent, and they make good watches.

at first glance i thought the header for this thread was "Quiche for Gnomes"....which is very funny. i was gonna comment on foccacia for elves.

oh well, for what it is worth, i think gnomes are cool.

Gnomes are like dwarves, but sociable.

Gnomes are like elves, but subtle in their magic, and closer to the creatures of the forest.

Gnomes are like halflings, but not lecherous.

Gnomes are like humans, but have a sense of humor.

The gnomes are besieged like the other races, but seem to handle it better. They rely on their natural illusion skills to help them get an edge on their foes. They're stuanch allies, but less dogmatic and contractual than the dwarves. They observe the spirit of their agreement more than the letter.
