A good game to play with one person?

I ran a couple highly successful Mage: The Ascention games for single players. In fact that's probably my favorite way to run most WoD stuff.

I'd say that the single most important thing becomes "What really interests the player?" Because they are going to be in the spotlight the entire time.

I've found that you can do things with a single player game that are very interesting, and which are very difficult in a game with 4 or 5 players. Things like lengthy investigations with very little combat, heavy roleplaying with NPC's that are directly involved with the single PC and even romantic relationships. It's much easier to portray how a love interest might act toward the PC when there aren't three other guys sitting around the room ready with a fart joke.

By the same token there are some things that are tough to do in solo games. You can't rely upon as wide a skillset when tackling challenges. And big combats are tough because it is too easy for a couple of bad die rolls to turn the whole thing against your protagonist.

I'd say that you should first figure out what genre she's most interested in, then figure out a general theme for the game and worry about system last.

Pendragon might work. The sources are full of solitary questing knights, and while some of the adventures are written to handle a group others work perfectly well with single adventurers. Some bits of the game might even work better with single PCs.
 

I was considering Call of Cthulu 6th Edition, the non-d20 kind. But I doubt I could really do that all that well. Not a huge Cthulu Mythos guy.

I know you said you weren't sure you could do Call of Cthulhu well, but if you are considering it, you might want to take a look at 'Monophobia' by Unbound Publishing, which is selection of scenarios specifically designed for a single player.

What I always notice when GMing for one player is that a party comes up with creative solutions faster and better than a single player. This is of course no surprise, more players = more crazy ideas, but it is something to keep in mind. When I was playing a mystery type game with my girlfriend I was sure to always have a back-up guy who could help her character when she was stuck. Just make a few NPC's who could logically help her if need be.

My picks would be:

  • Call of Cthulhu
  • Traveller
  • Tunnels & Trolls
  • Faery's Tale (probably with a dark "Brothers Grim" spin)

If you're into indie/story games, there's probably a bunch that would work. I believe S/Lay w/Me was designed for two people.

You might also check out the Mythic GM Emulator, if you want to try running a PC alongside her. I posted a story hour entry of my first game using it. I was pleasantly surprised.

Since our primary D&D game is starting to go 4-6 weeks between sessions, my son and I started up a solo Champions campaign to tide us over between sessions. One superhero tends to do better than one D&D character.

Not in the genres you're talking about, but I remember the James Bond RPG working very well one-on-one. Secret agents tend to be the self-suffucient types and it fits the genre really nicely.
 

Expeditious Retreat Press has a series of modules designed for one player character written for D&D and soon(I think) to be released for Pathfinder. The only games I think would be near impossible would be Paranoia and Ars Magica since both of those emphasis the group.

One on One Adventures Compendium (PFRPG) is already out. It includes serveral different solo adventures, but built for different character types (i.e. for a rogue 5-7 or a paladin 3-5). Not sure if you could string together a campaign for a single player from all of it though some of the adventures could sure be strung together.
