The just a brief run down for you then:

Astral and Shadow are coterminous with all other planes (and coexistent with each other), including the Inner Planes (IIRC they weren't in 1e/2e).

The Ethereal is coexistent with the plane from which it extends, but can be coterminous with other planes as well.

Out of curiosity, how is a character supposed to aid another in combat without attacking anyways? It's not like he can see you faking a lunge at him or anything.

My character constantly carries around a bag of marbles and throws them near where the bad guy is moving in combat to throw off his balance for a brief second.

Not really, but there is an example.
