Except that it DOES exist. They showed an original print earlier this year. Found in the UK, and they got permission from Lucasfilm to show it.
That may be why they're being coy about this.

That was one version someone in France, I think, had found, and they're either figuring out how to obtain it (I don't think studios have indefinite ownership over prints, otherwise a lot of collectors are in a lot of trouble) or if they can get the print ready for modern distribution channels in time.

If it doesn't work out, no one's upset, they didn't announce OG print. If they do get it worked out, people lose their minds.

I am gonna dovetail on this original comment of mine with this: What I remember finding in the last rabbit hole was this was more a matter of the cut was revised many times while it was in release. If you saw it one the second pass circuit ( which I likely did living in a literal cowtown in Western Kansas ) it was a different cut than earlier in the year/previous year.
