"A new Sheriff in town..."

First Post
Greetings again,

Happy holidays to all, whichever you may celebrate. And hope you enjoyed the break for the beliefs of others for those which celebrate "nothing". With that out of the way...

So the group, well, our twisted minded warrior and assassin, have decided to take over the city we're in. The plan is developed as follows:

The warrior has landed a job in the town militia. The assassin has recently been accepted into the assassin's guild. The warrior will get something with the city's top person's signature/wrighting on it and give it to the assassin to forge a note requesting to see the warrior. Another note is then forged telling the guards he is moved to the palace guard instead of wall duty. From here, after a few days/week, the assassin gains entry, bada bing bada boom, the city is ours. We get what we want with it, give it over to the assassin's guild whenver time for us to move on. Or maybe let them "rent" it and split the city budget, shrugs.

A few questions to the plot:
1. How easy would it be to forge above said notes to the general?
2. Would it be better to try to possess the lord or just kill him?
3. Erm... I forgot 3. What was my question? :P

Thanks,
Zane

Oh, btw.. 3. Are there any obvious flaws in above plot or does it seem it could be pulled off.

I don't understand how you're getting from "the assassin gains entry to the palace" to "the city is ours." John Wilkes Booth killed President Lincoln. That didn't suddenly make the United States "his" to do with as he pleased, then sell to the French when it was time for him to "move on." It did get him gunned down afterward.

Unless you're playing in some sort of Chronicles of Riddick setting, where assassinating a ruler automatically makes you the new ruler, I'd say there's a serious flaw in your plan. Namely, the fact that you assume getting into the palace will grant you immediate control over the city, rather than swift and terrible retribution from the city's armed forces.

Aye, we were discussing that as well...

We planned on telling the assassin's guild our plan and see if they'll back us up, since the guild will eventually get control over the city. Since our warrior would be on guard at the entrance to the palace/keep/whatever, he could help the assassin get in the building, then assuming the assassin doesn't naughty word up, he can get to the noble and take him out, before anyone knows it the king is dead and the guild moves in taking the palace and the guards that might be on duty. We've already found out the guild is the strongest force in the city by influance and by level/power so we have the right people behind us. I'm not sure how their "ruling" body is formed, but I'm sure if we just took it by force, whiped out the city guards we should be ok. And if everyone leaves town, we just got our own stronghold full of everything needed to start a city of our own for trading or whatnot.

Assuming you gain control of the palace, it is still likely you will bring down violent and brutally effective retribution. The assassins guild may be powerful when pulling strings behind the scenes but they will be slaughtered like sheep in an open brawl.

You have not considered how powerful a few Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Neutral Good churches banding together with what is left of the city guard, and beefed up with mercenaries funded by other guilds would look like.

If it were really so easy, the assassins guild would have done it themselves long ago. It would be even more likely that a rival noble, local or from a nearby city, would have done it. He would have more ready muscle to hold onto his gains.

Besides how do you know said ruler isn't maybe divinely inspired? Perhaps a demi-god in disguise?

The truth is while you might get in, unless you have some miltary might on your own side BESIDES a small band of assassins, you're not hold that city long. ESPECIALLY if some churches, with some well armed paladins and possibly a few celestials. (I see a wing of Solars) might try to send you to Hell for such a deed.

You're assuming very simple politics

You have an untested assassin, floating into the guild with plans to kill the king for shits and giggles. If what you're doing is that easy the Assassins guild has been able to do it for years. They haven't for a reason -- there's no profit in it or its really dangerous. If I was your contact in assassin's guild I'd file your name under 'disposable'. If they are not going to kill you just for screwing with their long term plans they are going to use you for a quick gain.

Don't be surprised if whoever knows the most about your plans doesn't show up at the last minute to kill your assassin and win the the gratitude of the king. If they aren't just taking odds on your success they have an interest in one direction or another that they will protect.
