A Paid Trip to Spellhold [D&D 4e]

On Puget Sound

First Post
Chizz watches the movements of the crew and passengers while taking his time to tie off the loose line. He also tries to determine whether the ballista could be swiveled to aim at someone on the deck of the ship, or conversely whether there are spots on the deck where it can't aim.

Cliff looks at the rower. He thought how he could fight so valiantly one day against the Shadow Thieves slaving some innocent and the next day stare at those slaves and feeling that empty feeling inside him. He felt helpless. He knew he was brave, but he would be foolish to go against the whole crew alone. Even if Taran and Chizz would join him, they would stand no chance. And how the wizards, what they would think, what would they do to the chapel... But something must be done.

Cliff walks and look at the rowers. They looked underfeed, dirty. Seeing the rats walking among them, he instincts come back to him and the rats starts to feel the predators Cliff's people has always been and the nearest rats go into hiding.

Cliff spots a man. His back is bloodied. He feels his pain. Cliff kneels next to him. He takes out a piece of clothes and his water skin. He wets the piece of clothes and hands the water skin to the man. "Here, takes some water, and hands the remaining to your mates." He then starts to clean the wounds of the man. As he does, Cliff starts to talks to the people around him. "How do you happen to become a slave of Kumar? What can you tell me about that man?"

Lysandros "Sandy". The Halfing of Athkatla

Sandy ran the streets of Athkatla, with little more than determination. He had a target, a goal: Vargas.
Sandy asked questions around the commercial district, to several merchants that didn't belong to the guild, people who had suffered the abuses from the guild and from Vargas personaly. The halfling played his cards well, gathering the information he needed. The merchant guild was not a possible target at the moment, they had a lot of security, not only in the physical aspects, they had spyes and assassins, and scribes and puppets in the goverment as well, so bringing proofs against them that were not solid would only be a wast of time; either they would make them disappear with their corrupt puppets, or would kill the magistrate in charge of the trial.
Vargas seemed like a more valid target. An old sea dog, a former pirate who was left aside by Vargas when he showed mercy to a slave, told Sandy that Vargas was about to leave the docks, and sail to Spellhold, a shady dot in the past of Athkatla; now abandoned. The captain, as the sailor said, used the island to hide illegal merchandise until he had clearance from the dock authorities (which happened when the merchant guild paid the bribe). It seemes that the guild paid, and now Vargas was to take the cargo to Athkatlian soil. That was the proof that Sandy could use to sink Vargas in a dungeon cell for the rest of his life. The merchant guild would certainly remain immune, charging the guilt to Vargas. At least the Captain would fall, thought the halfling.
Holding on to that hope, Lysandros ran to the docks under the veil of the night. He hoped to sneak into the captain's ship, but when he arrived to the place, he saw the lights of the Dirty Bitch sailing away. Damn! He had lost his chance. Dawn was near, so Sandy decided to wait for another ship to sail there, although he knew few, if any, ships sail to such a dread place.
In the morning, one of the ships began to load cargo, and prepeare to sail away. Sandy spoke with one of the sailors, who seemed as pirate as Vargas. However Sandy's natural talent grant him access to the information. The pirate told him that the ship, the Sea Carpet (Former Iron Fang) was sailing to Spellhold. The captain of the ship, Kumar the Pirate King, as he called himself, was taking recruits, but the man leaved stated that Sandy had no chance to be recruited.
Instead of trying to gain access to the crew, which Sandy found to be one of the worst things one could do, even for such a noble task as his, he sneaked to the pile of crates, using his kin's natural abilities, and hide inside a barrel. Unfortunately, this particular barrel contained olives in salt.
After a few hours he felt as he was lifted and transported inside the ship. Peaking through a hole in the barrel, Sandy made out Kumar, he was a half orc of dread looks. He also saw several "recruits" he thought. However, these folks seemed to contrast with their environment (except for another half orc who seemed as pirateish as Kumar). An elven woodsmen, a shifter armored in plates, a minotaur and a skinny human, wearing the clothes of the people of Baldur's gate, as Sandy had hear from the tales he read. The barrel he was traveling in was taken below deck, into a storage compartment.
After a few ours, Sandy felt it was safe to came out. He was covered in olive juice, and wanted nothing more than take a shower, but as he thought about how remotes were the possibilities of that, someone entered the cargo area. Instinctively Sandy went into hiding.

OOC: I'll need 2 stealth checks from Lysandros, that if he wishes to remain unseen.

Chiz notices that the ballista engine can be spin around like a turret, pointing at every part of the ship, although it can't target nothing outside the upper deck since the bolt would fly over the heads of people standing on the deck. However a bolt shot from it could impale anyone trying to go up by the stairs or swinging from a rope towards it. Chizz thinks that if he gets a closer look he might get to know how to use the thing, although it would draw the attention of the dwarf.

OOC: Will submit explanatory image soonish.

Cliff

The slaves surround Cliff as if he was a beacon of hope. No one has ever shared charity to them since they were captured. They reach out to touch the fur of the shifter, as if they were touching something sacred.
There is one particular slave in bad shape, he had been whiped recently, probably by the massive dwarf; his back is a disaster. Cliff uses his divine link to ease the pain of the man. When the paladin asks his questions, the slaves seems taken aback, as if considering the possible repercussions of their replies.
"We were captured in different opportunities. We were sailors from a merchant ship Captain Kumar sunk.” Explains one of the slaves. “They were farmers, captured during a siege. They were pirates as well, but choose the wrong pirate lord to follow.” He says that with disdain, regarding a more piratish looking group of slaves, one of them with an eye patch.
“Kumar is a wicked bastard, tha’ I tell ya; he might seem stupid and dumb, but inside tha’ damn skull o’ ‘is he hides a big brain. Somehow he lead us to believe that we were winning and then crushed us when we lowered our guard.” Laments one of the ex-pirates.
“My lord, could it be that you’ll rescue us from this unfair servitude?” asks one of the former farmers. “We will help you in anything we can.” The other slaves agree with repeated nods, even the ex-pirates seem content with the change of a mutiny. One grim looking slave that still remains away from the assembled group, says with raspy. voice “Pick yar cards well, Kumar The Merciless will spare no men if yar mutiny fails.” He warns. “Ah know tha’ first handed, Ah used to serve next to ‘im, where tha’ dwarven pest is now.”

Asterion
Asterion keeps hammering a piece he is shaping. Each hit of the hammer bringing sparks of enlighten to his mind. The shifter, Cliff, reminds him of someone he knew, he knew well. Someone he appreciated, he esteemed. But he had never saw his kin before, only heard about the hairy descendants of the lycanthropes. Somehow, he reminded him of Boulder, his master, from whom he learned his craft, who shaped him into the righteous minotaur he was today. Kumar told Asterion that Boulder died of age, and indeed the goliath was old enough for that. But perhaps, Kumar didn’t tell the truth…

Lochlan
Lochlan attempt to pretend to transport cargo seems to be effective. Ones he is underdeck, he catches a little humanoid hiding behind some barrels; there is a penetrating smell of olives in the air.

Lyssandros
Lyssandros watches the figure in the dark, approaching, hunting him. He made out the figure too late, the man is now looking him in the eyes. He had been discovered.

Chizz

Chizz makes out the general layout of the ship and the ballista.
