A paladin in Hell? (actually the Abyss. . .)

Well, demons are kinda ticked off at the universe in general, including other demons. Sure they would hate the paladin on sight- but would it be an extra special hate, or just a general sort of hate?

I guess what I'm saying is that the other demons would react to the paladin as if he were himself a demon. A few perfunctory attacks (just to see if the paladin and his companion are easy pickings) but they would stop as soon as it was obvious that the paladin could defend himself.

Good and evil- law and chaos- the average demon doesn't care. If it sees some entity that appears out of the ordinary, it will wish it harm, but probably won't risk itself too much to attack it. Any demon who likes taking on impossible odds has already been eaten by a bigger demon.

Mind you, the paladin could get himself into some scraps too. If he interferes with other demons, or is disrespectful to some big bad demon, well then there is going to be some violence to see who gets their way.

If he behaves in a properly vicious and opportunistic way, swaggering when appropriate and being a coward when appropriate, the paladin should do just fine in the abyss.

Just my two cp.

Here's an idea:

A powerful demon - perhaps Graz'zt? - decides to place the paladin under his protection, and word is spread to the demons in the area. Few of them want to upset someone so powerful, and so they keep their distance, fleeing if the paladin approaches. Braver ones may refer to him as "the Chosen One" before flight.

Of course, this catches the interest of Orcus and Demogorgon at the very least, who want to know what Graz'zt is up to with all of this 'Chosen One' stuff. They send demons to spy - and also to the Prime, to undermine the paladin there, just in case Graz'zt is trying to get an 'inside man' in the church to help corrupt it and increase his power somehow.

The paladin becomes more confused when demons appear and start following him - not in the sense of tracking him, but in the sense of working for him. He attracts a crowd of little demonic hangers-on who are hoping to please Graz'zt by sucking up to this "Chosen One" and acting as his servants and minions. Even a nalfeshnee, who offers to raise the cleric for him. (It's doubtful the cleric accepts, since he'd know a demon wanted to raise him, but hey, it was a nice gesture.)

Finally, a powerful demon with a plane-shifting item of some kind appears and offers the character and his friends transport to the Prime. It's working on Graz'zt's orders, of course. If they agree, he transports them back to the Prime.

Strangely, nobody seems to trust the paladin anymore...his superiors at the church are convinced that he's masking an alignment shift somehow, anyone who saw him return knows that he appeared in a puff of fire and brimstone accompanied by a hideous demon, and there have been strange warnings filtering down from the gods about a 'Chosen One' who is expected to lead the forces of evil to glorious victory...

Okay, swap mine around , a devil is hiding out in the Abyss. Same story.

Have him about to get home and see a a Balor torturing a Solar, even a solar of his god. Now if it was his duty to bring this body back he should do that, but let him stew over the moral dilemma. You also have a nice hook if you ever want another adventure in the Abyss. Go rescue the solar.

Hope that helps

James! How are you doing? I haven't seen you post in a while. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places...

I hope everything is going well with you.

If he's in the abyss, and isn't a sage when it comes to Knowledge (Planes), he's probably mincemeat. Demons aren't too willing to talk, they'd rather stick you and play twister with your vitals.
Oh, c'mon! That's the lazy way to run demons. They can so much more interesting than that!

That's a good one too.

Perhaps the paladin is eventually approached by demonic emissaries of Grazz't saying how their master has great respect for the LG undead fighting deity/church of the paladin particularly as an eternal foe of the demonic Orcus and as a gesture of respect the paladin is an honored guest on the plane where he will be feted and his every request granted (through demonic magic, but that goes without saying).

And so then when he gets back onto the prime, undead and Orcus cultists try to take out the paladin at his home temple before the Grazz't LG alliance can really get off the ground. Of course the whole thing was a feint by Grazz't to draw the attention of the spies in his kingdom who work for Orcus and to draw one of the upper planar powers into conflict with Orcus after the goat demon's minions react to the supposed alliance and attack the god's minions on the prime.

I don't know how time flows in these planes (if it's one to one linearly, or if it's more like the Prophets in the wormhole of DS9 - that is, time doesn't really exist for them).

But if it's possible that time can be messed up, I would take that scenario that involves the devils torturing a soul for his "wicked deeds" and make that the paladin himself - that is, a "future-him".

So the paladin is not only stuck with a moral dilemma, but also a quandary on the consequences of his actions.

Of course, the devils might refuse to tell him what his future-self did to end up here, but man, imagine the look on the player's face.

Hi Wolfspider!

I've been pretty busy lately. Trying to sell one house while buying a second. . . working too much. . . and just started to run a Play by Email game.

I've barely had any time to update the RttToH thread (although one tiny one went out today). I've been spending most free time working on the PBeM and developing things for when my RttToH party goes far "off course" (such as right now).

I've also been doing a lot of work on my webpage I added a calendar to track the games, then a problem with emails made me add an entire update section. You can read the logs of the PBeM there if you're curious and have time to spare. :)
