A Question for 4E Players: Where to now?

4E Players: What now?

Mercurius

Legend
This question is specifically for those whom 4E has been the primary form of D&D that you've been playing in recent years, whether since 2008 or just the last year or two. You are not disqualified from posting if you have played other forms of D&D (including Pathfinder) recently, but I'd prefer if only those vote for whom 4E has been your main gig. I think it would be interesting to see a bit more specifics from different demographics.

So the question: Given that 5E is out, what now? Are you going to play 5E, continue with 4E, or something else?

Main group: continue 4E for sure.

Side game of 5E for some of them is likely, but probably one-shots/short games rather than a campaign. I might get to play 5E as a player, or not, we'll see.

I stick with 4e.

This year I finally got the chance to be a player in a campaign instead of DMing (at least part-time, we are taking turns on DMing in that campaign).

Whenever that campaign is done, I have a new one already in the planing phase. Though if our group wants to play something else I would be up for it as long as I don't have to DM it.

Over the last 5 years I have primarily played 4e. During that time I have also played some BX and AD&D.

I am very excited about 5e. I like the concept of playing different styles with a single system. For now I have converted by BX game with the kids to a basic 5e game.

My adult group I play 4e with broke up a few months ago (primarily since I got a new job and dropped out). I hope to get that group back together eventually or start a new adult group. If the 5e DMG has enough stuff to scratch my 4e itch then I may just use 5e for the adult group. If not I will start a new 4e campaign.

Even if 5e can recreate the 4e style it probably won't be as 4e as 4e so either way I doubt I am done with 4e for good.

Thanks for making it multiple choice. I won't run 4e or PF, but I'm playing in both, playing Edge of the Empire, and running 5e.

Last 4E game is soon, then I start a new campaign, new edition.

Part of this is that I seem to run 1 long campaign per edition, though I wouldn't mind that cycle stopping.

Beyond that, 5E seems to keep a lot of strengths of 4E: cleaner core, dm friendly, relatively balanced and strong character options across the board, saner high level play (or at least highish level play). But it also offers faster combat, support for a wider range of play styles, greater compatibility with older material, cuts back on option bloat, and takes a better approach to magic items.

I am looking forward to it.

My main group plays all kinds of games. This is great because we never have to ask for a permanent "what now?".

For the time being we will continue with 4e, though we are playing some SWEotE right now.

4e has such a solid core, and is so easy to DM that I doubt that I'll be jumping ship to anything else on a permanent basis. For me tweaking 4e and achieving worthwhile results has been so easy that I can't see myself going to a system that requires a lot of work out of the gate, or a lot of bandaging to make it work. I've been implementing ideas from other games into 4e with no real loss in capability, and I expect I'll continue to do so.

Yeah, I'm planning to stay on the 4e wagon for the short and at least intermediate term. I'm not dependent on DDI, so I'm good even if it goes away.

As a DM, running 4e is a dream and I'm not prepared to give up the quality of life stuff built into the edition.

Now, my group plays a lot of interludes between chapters of our 4e games. Usually these interludes aren't D&D, but I floated 5e to them for the next one along with Basic/RC 3d6-in-order style. They were unanimous about Basic, so no 5e for us for a while.
