A Question of Timing

I currently have a situation.

I recently joined a campaign with a new DM. I want to run my own game. While I can run a game and play in one too, the problem comes up in terms of "what day" to run.

I have several players that only have one day on the weekend free ... the day I'm currently playing in this other campaign. Several of the players in that campaign would like to join mine, as well, up to and including leaving the current campaign.

I don't want to hurt the current DM's feelings. This is his first time behind the screen and I'd like to encourage him to continue. Unfortunately I'm a more experienced DM, the other players realize this, and several of them would rather not weather the bumps and bruises of gaming with a new DM. We've already had one new gamer quit the campaign because he wasn't having fun.

I feel really bad, however, about telling somebody: "Hey, I'm usurping your game day and your players unless you agree to move your game to another day." No matter HOW I say it, that's sort of what it feels like I'd be saying.

Anybody run into this problem? Anybody solve this problem?

Find out if he wants to play instead of just DMing. If so, perhaps you two could work out a rotation. One session he DMs, the next you do so. It'll give you both more time between sessions to plan, it'll give you both a chance to play, and it'll give the other players a chance to play in the second game. Also, if he pays attention, he may pick up some things from watching you.
