A quick question about the Sith

When everyone keeps saying “Always two there are, no more, no less,” does this mean that only two Sith can be active in the universe at one time or that a master can have only one apprentice at a time? I’m leaning towards the latter, since I remember a couple comic books where there were armies of Sith running around, plus, if there were only two Sith running around at a time it would take so much time and energy to explain every single groovy lightsaber duel we get into in my Star Wars d20 game.

There are only two Sith in the Universe. One master, and one student. Or so the novel for TPM said. At a time in the past there were many Sith. And they spent more time fight and backstabbing each other than they did the Jedi. So since that time long in the past there are only two.

Not that you are required to follow that in your game. That's just the official storyline.

That reminds me of the following from the Official Ninja Webpage:

Seppuku is the ancient art of killing yourself if you get super pissed and can’t find anybody else to kill. Ninjas use all sorts of crap to kill themselves—guns, ropes, knives, lasers, spears, etc.—and don’t even think twice about it. These guys would kill themselves for just about any reason and often for no reason at all: that’s why there are so few ninjas today.

I would be more curious to know how Yoda could possibly know this fact. The Dark side is so powerful that the entire Jedi Council is ignorant of a sith Lord living on Coruscant. So how can he know that there can only be two Sith at any time?

i'd say there's gotta be ways around the "only two" rule.

i think it's more of a Sith tradition than some immutable law of the universe.

Darth Sidious is the direct "descendant" of a line of Sith Lords going back to Darth Bane, who was the one who instituted the rule of two after all the other Sith were destroyed.

but there are Sith holocrons still floating around, holding the personalities of Sith Lords that might train a Force user in the ways of the Sith if activated.

i mean, the holocron isn't going to say, "Let me scan the entire galaxy...oh, i'm sorry, there are already two Sith present in this galaxy. i can't train you." especially if the Sith in the holocron comes from a time before the rule of two was even implemented.

it begs the question, even if there were more than two Sith in the galaxy, how would anyone know? they seem to always work from the shadows, keeping their true nature hidden. unless Sith have some sort of special ability to detect each other at galactic distances, there could be a whole mess of them floating around, each pair thinking they are the "only two."

also, there could always be deviant off-shoot cults scattered around the galaxy that still carry on a modicum of the Sith tradition, albeit in a distorted form.

i'm working on such a cult for an upcoming SW campaign.

... didn't yoda said that his vision was clouded? ... presumably by the darkside.

and I would think the light side has the same ability (ie when there isn't as much users it can hide the few that are left) ... otherwise the emperor and vader would have known yoda was around.

heck ... they didn't even know obi-wan was still alive until he entered the death star.

How do you know they didn't know that Yoda and Obi-wan were still around they might just not have cared or maybe only Vader knew and chose not to make an issue out of it Because of that small "good"part still left in his soul.

As for there only being 2 sith lords it makes you wonder what they would have done if the Emporor Palpatine and Vader had been successful in converting Luke to the dark side surely Vader would not have helped if he knew that one of them would have to die to make room for the new boy most likely him.I do wonder however if it is not going to turn out that Palpatine was Anakin/Vader's father.I guess we will find out in 3 years.

so what happens if a student no longer has anything to learn from the master?
That would be the time when he decides he should be the master. This would generally set in motion a series of events leading to one of the current Sith becoming an ex-Sith (in the "ex-parrot" sense), and the remaining one choosing a new apprentice.
