A rant about character creation

I think I can say, pretty confidently, that I have never spent a non-weapon proficiency on Rope freakin' Use. It's not all that useful unless you're tying people up, running a ship, or doing a lot of climbing of ropes.

Amusingly, I always had Use Rope on my PCs when I played 2e. Never know when you'll fall into a pit or have to climb a cliff or something.

But if they thought Use Rope was so useful and never took it, then they're being silly. The Ranger was probably loaded down with something like Healing, Herbalism, and Blind-fighting. I kind of vaguely remember what NWPs were considered useful and powerful back in 2e. Though I think Tightrope Walking is a lot more narrow than 3e Balance (many of 2e's NWPs are very narror compared to 3e skills) and probably nowhere near as useful. I always preferred 3e's skills, they worked better, and they were more clearly defined; I remember the kinds of fast ones players would pull with 2e NWPs back in the day (i.e. Healing as good as cure light wounds, Spellcraft allowing magic item iding without casting identify etc.)

This is one of those stories I read from time to time that make me really appreciate the players I have, hehe.

Belisi, this sounds like their own personal problem - next time you should stick to what you feel like playing and tell them to worry about their own character. If I were DM-ing this one, that ranger may have some issue in the very near future where his lack of a certain skill gets him into trouble.

@ Ranger: "Guess you should have picked the ____ nwp then..." :p

First off, I would like to thank everyone who's posted on this thread. For your kind words, suggestions, and frankly for letting me know that I do in fact have a right to be upset about this particular gaming session.

However, I feel a need to point out that this is not usual behavior for all of my friends in this particular group. I'd say this is only always usual for one of them (not the ranger). And to be fair, after the argument one of them did ask me if I was ok (once again, not the ranger).

In summation, I might have been a little harsh when I said, "all" of my friends were getting on my back, but there is still some truth to that statement; I felt backed into a corner with no one supporting me.

We got yer back, Belisi!

And feel free to ask the people here about PC design any time.

There are lots of very knowledgable gamers here who can help you either round out your role-playing concept or optimize your PC into a lean-mean Orc-slaying machine.

That's the reason why I hate it when Systems are not able to make every choice interesting and balanced (Weapons/Armors and very long Skill lists are the most frequent offenders) or at least give you a hint about the most important skills. Thankfully newer Systems (not only D&D) are more and more solid (done their math and learned what is really important from the decades of Adventuring).

Your Situation is even more worse since your "friends" didn't help you out (in front and in a polite matter) and ridicule you for your choices instead. Not everyone has the same amount of "System-Mastery" (either don't know the game or just don't care) but that shouldn't matter since it's all about the FUN.

You should always take use rope. According to Rob Schwalb one of the D&D writers anyone who gets 23 ranks in Use Rope wins the game. :D

There are no ranks* for AD&D NWP. ;)

Unless you mean investing 23 slots in that single proficiency, which I agree would make you win the game... :p
