A Song of Ice and Fire Update

Sorry to get off topic, but I heard that nothing happens to advance the plot in the book before Crossroads of Twilight as well, is that true? I'm glad I never got into WoT.

I think its actually the three books before... :)

But if the new Martin book is anything like the sample chapter in Dragon it's gonna kick...

No, book 9 of the Wheel of Time, Winter's Heart remarkably changes the whole planet...it's book 10 that's absolutely horrible. The whole plot can be summed up as:
Egwene gets kidnapped.

Hehe. I personally believe that the situation with Dany in Mereen has definite "Elayne takes a bath" potential. But I have faith that Martin won't fall into that trap.

Eh, nothing that he's every written about Dany has exactly enthralled me. I love all the other characters, but Dany is so boring. If I didn't believe she was of paramount importance somewhere down the road, I'd skip her chapters entirely. As it is, I just grit my teeth and push through them because the other bits are interesting enough.

Whatever her storyline is, I hope Martin gets to the point soon. I also hope that she doesn't end up becoming queen of Westeros. I have to say, I'll feel more than a bit cheated if the whole series climaxes with that.

She isn't evil or anything (she actually seems to be fairly decent), but I just can't cheer for her, even in a small way. I'd be happier if she only got one chapter per book, or better yet, just showed up in Westeros fully "formed" and ready to be defeated as yet another threat.

Any of the Starks are interesting, as is Tyrion. Hey, even Jaime is more interesting than Dany. Any of them could carry a whole story themselves and hold my interest. I do have to say, though, that Jon and Arya are my favorites.

I'm the opposite. Once the Starks started dying off, I lost interest. Jon Snow is fascinating, but Brand's transformation to a warg is ho-hum. Dany, on the other hand, floored me when she took that slave city. I was completely and delightfully surprised. I read that chapter three times before moving on through the rest of the book. :)

I'd post a spoiler-esque theory about where this is all going, but I don't know how to black out my text.

Without the spaces, of course.

[rant]IMO, Book 9 is the biggest overrated piece of trash in the series. Aside from one example of progression, the rest of the book is dull boring with one big plothole, one ludicrous 'Elayne and Aviendha have to get naked together' scene, and whole pages of nothing. At least Path of Daggers was interesting in some places, even if it didn't really advance the plot, nor did it contain any rampant plot holes.[/rant]

i have faith

that George R.R. Martin knows what he is doing. I'd rather a good book be produced next year, rather than a just "okay" book be produced now.

Since everyone else has commented, I've almost given up on Robert Jordan. I'm suffering through Winter's Heart (even though I already know what happens). Mainly I've kept up so far because I want to know what happens in the freaking end!

I hate to be critical, but I swear Robert Jordan could have summarized this series into one compact 300 page book.

I could go on and on about Jordan (and have in several threads before) I stuck with those books up to the last one and what made me so mad was he was actually going around giving interviews about how long the book was and how much he had to cut out, and how he only does huge long books. For goodness sake, I've went off about the change in font size over and over and how his books get shorter and have longer waits between every book, but to tell me that Crossroads of Twilight was heavily edited because it was too big and that this is all you were left with, give me a break I could of edited out another 400 pages and not changed the book in any significant way. What did they leave out a second bath scene? What a big load of crap from somebody who has obviously lost interest in his own story. He didn't cut anything out he padded the heck out of a 150 page story and still missed his deadline.

As far as Martin goes , well the suspense is killing me but I rather he not rush out crap. Just one 200 page bath scene and I'm out of here.

Awhile back someone posted a link to a funny site "ultra condensed books" It was the plot of the book in one or twp paragraphs at most. Very funny stuff IMO. The have the WOT books and for Crossroads and the one before it, it was "nothing happens". Wish I had the link.

You're a better man than me. I bailed on Jordan at book 7, after a book or two of going nowhere, and bailed on Terry Goodkind after book 4. Martin still has my attention -- for the moment. You're only as good as your last book.
