A Sore Thumb: Ways for a Chinese girl to stand out?

Large Breasts!

(can't believe we're 4-5 posts in and no boob jokes yet).

The reason for that is that this behavior is not, and has never been, welcome here - specifically harrassment due to age, race or gender. Please refrain from making posts that are insulting and inflammatory to other board members.

Another classic (and maybe overdone) "stick out like a sore thumb" technique has always been albinism.

An albino (palid skin, white hair, pink eyes) circus performer would be memorable.

Sorry.

No offense was met.

That post was too brief to encapsule the full meaning I was intending.

She was looking for a way to distingush herself physically from the other performers. A full figure is one way of doing that. If she was gaming with some of the groups I have, that would be more than enough to set her character apart.

I've played in games where the Player (both male & female) make a character with large breasts as a distinguishing feature. Only once has it turned into 'let's let big boobs do it'. Usually, the player has enough role-playing skill & the group is mature enough that no part of the physcial desscription merits a snicker.

It was more a comment of the maturity level of many of the groups I played with in college whose first quetion when they met ANY female character, NPC or PC, was "How hot is she?"

That said,

My post was niether intended to belittle, harass, or annoy any member of these boards. If any take offense, I apologise.

Maybe she is a contortionist with a nervous habit of absently popping her joints in and out of their sockets.
I would go with Mark on this one. Characterful, plus provides a useful basis for character advancement that is distinct from your generic hired killer.

[JOKE]I think she should have a clubfoot, a hairlip, and a humpback. And maybe a benign tumor growing out of the side of her neck...

Even better - nothing stands out in a crowd like a undeveloped conjoined fetus growing out of her back![/JOKE]

Her actions will do more to implant her in a character's memory than looks.

A male character, especially in a RPG is going to see gorgeous women in every adventure. In two years he will probably have had at least one love affair and seen scores of heart stopping women.

Yes, a red haired asian girl would be memorable. But then there's that Mexican dancer who saved his life, and that English doctor that patched him up, and that French girl who broke his heart... You get the idea.

Skills are memorable. When she performed, perhaps she was clearly the best of the troop, even the best he's ever seen. Maybe she watched HIM during the performance, as if she was dancing and tumbling for HIM only. Maybe she tossed him a rose, or a silk scarf at the end of the performance, but disappeared before he could talk to her.

Alternately, maybe she wore an exotic and memorable perfume. When he passes her on the street, she seems familiar, but it's the perfume that really kicks his memory.

Now that's a good one.

A very good one.

Smell is a very important sense that is often overlooked in roleplaying.

Just taking the time out to mention a distinctive scent is often enough to impress a character into a player's mind.

Maybe even a perfume/drug that addles the senses of those who smell it. One she's developed a resistance too due to prolonged exposures? Maybe she's even addicited to it by now.

Tons of possibilities here.

I offically change my vote from the lucious beauty to the distinctive smell.

Not too much of a leap, considering Japan's Ainu are/were considered Caucasian. Or course, there's probably more from real anthropolgists to parse that defiinition.

The Ainu have several Caucasian-like features but, genetically, they are not Caucasian. Genetically, they fall into the Asian branch and not the European branch. I'm being picky about this mainly because this misconception has been and is used and abused by some racists to support their crackpot theories (please note that I am definitely not claiming or trying to imply that Prince of Happiness is a racist). Anyone really interested in this subject should probably take a look at Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza's The History and Geography of Human Genes.

I know this sounds a little Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but - what about a sword? She carries a sword strapped to her back, even when performing, but she never uses it in the performance. The PC will be left wondering why an acrobat is carrying a sword that she never uses, and when he sees her again, with the sword, it triggers his memory.

Of course, why she's carrying that sword might be an entire story in itself - maybe it's an old family heirloom, and she's required to guard it as the last member of her family. Or maybe she has sworn to kill her father's murderer with his sword. Or maybe there's some ancient evil bound into the blade that will awaken when it is used to kill someone. Or maybe all three...
