Aasimar

I really dig it. I think I'm going to use it or at least use it a base. Anyway, I noticed for most of these race threads people don't include any racial feats. I would think that would be important piece of the package, concerning balance. Any ideas for racial feats?

Cool. Glad you like it.

I am planning on getting to racial feats eventually. I just haven't had time.

I just quickly scanned through the angel entries in the MM for inspiration. An idea for the minor racial ability popped out: Angelic Presence. All the angels get a -2 penalty to attacks against them until they are bloodied. How about aasimar get a -1 penalty to all attacks against them until they're bloodied? That would fit with the dragonborn's +1 to attacks when bloodied and the tiefling's +1 to attack against bloodied foes ... and also represents that aasimar are not full-blooded angels. AND it opens the door for a racial feat that bumps up their angelic presence to the full -2 penalty. And perhaps an epic feat that gives them the cloak of vengeance version: -2 penalty and 1d8 fire/1d8 cold damage.

I'm also considering adopting someone else's house rule of allowing races to apply their two +2 stat bonuses to three or so abilities rather than having them locked into place. If I do this, I think I'll let aasimar choose two from Con/Wis/Cha. (I'm also considering letting the races choose from four abilities, in which case it would be Str/Con/Wis/Cha, as though seem to be the best abilities for the angels).

Thoughts?

I realize the boards are inundated with homemade aasimar, but I've made some changes/additions to mine ... so if anyone wants to comment, feel free to do so!

Of all of the versions of the Aasimar I think yours is one of the purest, for the simple fact that yours is basically a polarized verson of the tiefling. I haven't done an outrageous amount of looking around yet but heres what I've come up with. Instead of +2 intimidate give them +2 perception. I think insight and perception makes them seem like a more stoic race, plus Aasimar actually originally had a +2 to spot and listen. As for the resist, I would suggest going back to cold or lightning (my actual suggestion) instead of radiant resist for the same reasons tieflings recieved fire instead of necrotic. Radiant is vastly more restricted to the things on the lighter end of the spectrum, or at least to a limited crowd whereas fire and electrical, or cold are all more mainstream and universally used. In a perfect world it would make sense that tieflings would have both fire and necrotic resist but in a balanced game I'd take the one that will have a more realistic impact on the game (either is fine though and you could even include feats to solve this problem)

What else can I say? There aren't a lot of changes to suggest. I might say in addition you consider some obvious feats. One exactly like the +1 fire and necroctic damage feat but radiant and electrical instead. The only place this may diverge is for the paragon feat for angelic zeal that would normally make infernal wrath deal fire damage, make it deal radiant damage in addition to the heal instead of trying to add temporary hit points or some other protective equivalent. If you were bent on keeping it a defensive solution the make it a respectable temp hp pool or a free save.

Lets see if you like any of my ideas so far then I'll rant a bit more ;)

Hi Domstrae,

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

I had originally given my aasimar +2 Insight/Perception and cold resistance, but someone else (see tombowing's post #6 above) persuaded me to change it. I could possibly be persuaded to change them back. No one in my group is playing an aasimar yet, so I can still make changes without any hassle.

well perception vs intimidate bonus is small potatos but even so perception is more in line with the 3.5 aasimar, so its a question of if you want to keep it true to its previous versions or if you want to try and branch out and be creative. If thats the case then theres a build over on gleemax with wings, which I disagree with but is definitely well thought out.

As for resistance, again its not as if resist to radiant damage is inappropriate. Cold or lightning are more common types of damage for monsters to use. Make a paragon or epic feat that gives aasimar radiant resistance (or at least cold or lightning) equal their innate resist

My original intention was to be true to the 3.5 aasimar. However, as I pointed out, I was persuaded to be a little more creative with it. Personally, though, I'm not attached to any particular set of skill bonuses.

Got a link? I'm not sure I like the wings either. That should be an epic-level feat or something.

You make a very good point here. This is the bit I'm most likely going to change at this time. I'm not sure which would be better though - cold or lightning.
