Abandoned Mill - Inspiring picture of a ruin

Thought this looked very 'D&D'-y.

There is a recently decommissioned power plant very near where I live, and on a cloudy night, with nearly all of its lights now off, it looks like a stereotypical haunted mansion or castle.

Unfortunately, I don't have the camera gear to take a good picture of it in low-light conditions.

I was just looking at this very picture, or at least pictures of the same building, the other day when I googled " abandoned castle " . I think anyone who lives in North America is basically extremely deprived when it comes to ruins...

Canyons are more of an American thing I think. Up here our favourite rock formation is the ridiculously old and eroded Canadian Shield.

We have plenty of ruins, if you include the industrial buildings that are abandoned all over the place. The problem is those ruins are not as durable as a fortification built with siege weaponry in mind and so can be insanely hazardous after a few decades of disuse.

I must admit, in Europe we're spoiled when it comes to medieval ruins and castles. Even the small industrial town where I grew up has a castle from the late Middle Ages. It actually looks quite impressive on the right photos: Kasteel Helmond | | Raym`s Fotolog.

But like I said, it's in an industrial town, and these photos don't show the textile factory built right behind it, the canal running along it and the busy viaduct just in front: http://www.ed.nl/multimedia/dynamic/02296/luchtfoto_helmond__2296622q.jpg.

It takes some of the romance out of it ...

At my behest last year my family actually went on a little road trip looking for ruined things and ghost towns around where we live. The thing was, what were supposed to be abandoned places invariably had nicely paved roads and were pretty much completely inhabited, though in proximity to somme old buildings. Probably the most impressive thing we say was an abandoned quarry filled with water with some of the old buildings still standing around, extremely rusted and worn out.
