I got this idea from some forgotten book. I have a house rule that if you give up some equivalent abilities, you can make up your own. For example, an ability could be immunity to bronze weapons at sundown.(was from a different d20 than dnd) Also DR 5/+1 at midnight, etc. The more specific or weak, the weaker the required ability to be given up.

Any thoughts on this.

I have set modifications I allow, so in general I don't let my players customize their classes. (They're welcome to write new (prestige) classes and feats, though, which provides the flexibility they desire.)

With my group as long as a 3/4ths majority says you can do something you can. But the problem with specific abilties like that is that they work better than normal when they work but if they don't come up(which is fairly likely)they do nothing

also it makes more singleminded characters

I dont let the players modify classes. I do that ;)

Again though like someone else said if they have an idea for a feat or something I will pass or fail it.

What I mean is like a character has some ability that describes them. For example, Uncreative Mimicry(Ex). A character has a -2 to all checks to create something or some idea, but has a +2 bonus when taking an idea of someone elses. Lets say a bard with this ability makes a Proffesion(Baker) check to create a new dish to please a noble. That bard suffers a -2 to the check. If they were trying to make a song, and modified or copied a song they know they would get a +2. See!

Me too, mostly. A player describes his character. He might say he'd be interested in something along the lines of X... I might allow that. But mostly for me as a GM something happens in game, and I ask them if they want this to become a permanent effect on their character. When I ask that's generally the closest to the player asking me that happens.

Sometimes, of course, something just happens to the character and if they want it to go away they have to make a special quest or new adventure to change back.

I've ruled that all level 1 class abilities are feats and can be taken (or swapped out) as such (unless rulled otherwise)

I even let a feat be used to take an orison as a once per day ability
