They way I read your post I thought you were unsure of the source so I provided it. I haven't found it in the PHB II though.

Ah thanks :P

It's not really said "explicitly" in the PHB2, but check the premade feat lists at the end.

The way rules threads tend to work, some come for the original issue; some come for the side arguments and rule nuances. I don't see anything wrong with pointing out rule inconsistencies. It's important for DMs to know about these problems before they get a player who insists that the RAW is on his side and brings up said examples.

I know. I just (still) want to know what Hypersmurf's actual answer is to the question at hand.

Or a reading from the FAQ:

Frustratingly, it says what, but not why. So while I agree with you that SLAs are closer to Spells (relative to, say, an Eye Beam or a Fist of Thunder), there's no chain of reasoning backing it up, so we can't see if the chain of reasoning applies to spells as well as SLAs.

Thanks for the reference, though! I don't think anyone had pointed that out explicitly yet. -- N

26 examples of Spells as a special attack in the Monster Manual.

You did catch that the discussion is now about how Ability Focus interacts with Spell-Like Abilities, right? You can't take Ability Focus (Spell-Like Abilities), even though it's a single line item (just like Fists of Thunder and Lightning).

I'd argue that spells are more like spell-like abilities than they are like fists.

And spell-like abilities appear more than 26 times. :)

I believe the consensus is that it would apply to a single spell, consistent with its application to SLAs, with reservations being expressed from a variety of angles.
