The last time I told my players that the gloves were off and fair Encounter Level was not a consideration, the characters got into a stressed induced fight with each other in the very next session which incited the collapse of that campaign! Be careful with that one.
Edit: But a warning like that doesn't make for a worthwhile post. You want advice. Here's a devious tactic that works with my players. Before our game session begins, I'd say something like, "I saw this thread over at ENWorld about a group that encountered the BBEG and just charged straight in without prepping. Everyone died and got mad at the DM, which was totally unfair because he didn't make them do that. The worse part is, they kicked the DM out of the group, which is just totally heinous. What do you guys think?" *shrug*
