The preview in The Ghost King involves Tharizdun, the Princes of Elemental Evil, and their cults . . . along with another entity, called "The Progenitor" who's in communication with Tharizdun.

That's what I'm hoping... Probably not, but... I guess it was the "surprising" part that really caught my attention.

4e faerun and beyond?

Tharizdun most likely.

I remember that Gygax wrote a bunch of Greyhawk novels that involved a lot to do with Tharizdun. It was the Gord the Rogue series, and it involved many things that never made it into D&D, and dealt with the end of the Multiverse that Tharizdun would cause.
While it won't be a retelling of that series, the Abyssal Plague might involve Tharizdun, simply because he has a lot to do with the Abyss in 4e.

My view of what happened with the forgotten realms was that Tharizdun was in control of Cyric since "the prince of lies" was insane and knew Mystra's true name so when he confronted her in dweomerheart that knowledge allowed Tharizdun to kill Mystra and destroy dweomerheart under the belief this would free him.

Sounds better than a love tiff between Helm and Tymora resulting in a fatal duel between Helm and Tyr...

Still that leaves the abyssal plague wide open!
