Spoilers Academy Awards 2025

Did anybody else watch? I had it on but was a distracted viewer for a number of sections. Feel free to post spoilers (if you call the results that).

I thought Conan did a good job. I'm not a huge fan, but I generally like his stuff. His musical number was my kinda humor. The overall production seemed pretty good, if kinda forgettable (which is probably a good thing in this context).

Overall, I think if you were okay with the nominations you would be okay with the winners. If there were any major upsets, I don't know enough to recognize them.

It was nice to see Dune 2 get a couple wins. I think it really deserved them. I would have liked for Nosferatu to go home with something, and thought The Wild Robot deserved the win for animation, but I understand why they lost. Wicked performed exactly as I would have expected (based on my review). I haven't seen Anora yet, but after that good of a showing I guess I should make an effort to see it eventually. My interest in The Substance is definitely piqued.

It's a fantastic movie and I think not what a lot of people expect (it's very funny).

In general it was interesting to see a year at the Oscars when barely any movie winning much had a budget over $20m, very different to a lot of years.

(Anora was made on $6m but you couldn't tell to look at it.)

I saw 7 out of the 10 best picture noms this year.
I thought It was a pretty good year for film.

Very happy to see Anora do well, Sean Baker has been making interesting films for a while now. And now he's become the first person to win 4 Oscars for the same film in one night.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Brody's win. Chalamet practiced for a couple of years to learn how to talk and sing like Dylan, only to get beaten by a guy who had his accent tweaked by AI. Although, to be fair, they took 7 years to make The Brutalist, and 99% of his performance is in English and it was the better performance from the ones I’d seen. I just thought they would make an example of it.

I love hearing which films and stars get nominated, I also really enjoy hearing about who won. I do not, however, enjoy watching the show live or otherwise. Too boring.

In Australia it’s in the middle of a Monday, so I always just watch the winners roll in online.

They are restricted by their rules on what movies can be nominated so only movies that fit the requirements can be considered.
