They are restricted by their rules on what movies can be nominated so only movies that fit the requirements can be considered.
I did not look into which movies were not eligible. The number I saw was that 36% of movies were ineligible this year, which seems high. Were there any big budget movies that were blocked this year? I know there have been a few times weirdness happened and movies didn't get allowed for obscure reasons, but I didn't hear about anything with the current awards.
The trend of the academy leaning towards popular movies or indies swings back and forth, but it's trended towards indie for awhile now.
Deadpool, obviously.I didn't go out of the way to watch it. I was planning to not watch it at all. But I dined out and they had it playing in the restaurant. I wasn't paying attention, but managed to see the musical number with Deadpool in the middle.
No idea who won.
I loved his Editing award acceptance speech!...Sean Baker has been making interesting films for a while now. And now he's become the first person to win 4 Oscars for the same film in one night.
As I understand it the AI use was modest to tweak his accent. He delivered the lines in Hungarian. Even with months of practice, sometimes someone can't get the accent right.I'm still not sure how I feel about Brody's win. Chalamet practiced for a couple of years to learn how to talk and sing like Dylan, only to get beaten by a guy who had his accent tweaked by AI. Although, to be fair, they took 7 years to make The Brutalist, and 99% of his performance is in English and it was the better performance from the ones I’d seen. I just thought they would make an example of it.
I loved his Editing award acceptance speech!I liked his Best Director speech, too.

I am wary of the overuse of AI, but I think adjustments like this are not unreasonable. I mean, should we dismiss lighting staff, hair stylists, makeup artists, costumers, sound engineers who also tweak an actor's sound and appearance? The actor should do all that stuff themself? Or is it the non-human aspect you object to? What if someone else dubbed Brody's Hungarian lines?
