I had an idea für a power. I building at the moment on a swashbuckling setting, and one of my ideas I want to share. It is the opportunity for every charakter in the setting.

Active Parry
Encounter
Immediate React
Trigger: You would be hit be a melee attack.
Attack: Melee Basic Attack vs. the opponents Attack Roll.
Hit: You prevent the damage from the opponents attack.

Disign notes: It is only an Encounter Power, so it does not slow down the Game. And I hope there will be further Feats like the Intelligence Blademaster, so other classes (like the Rogue) can use this Power for good.

So, what opinon do you have?

What class? What level?

Plus its not really an attack since your not attacking a defense. It should probably be a utility power.

Active Parry Ranger Utility 10
Encounter * Martial, Weapon melee
Immediate Interrupt
Trigger: You are hit by a melee attack.
Effect: Roll Dexterity as if you were making an attack with your weapon. If your roll is higher than the one that hit you take no damage from that hit.


Something like that.
 

Recently, I was thinking that 4E "misses" something - there are Attack and Utility Powers - where are the Defense powers? I was thinking of parries and stuff like that. I think there is a good reason why they don't exist (try making up 30 defense/parry powers for each of the 8 classes that work in most, if not every encounter). Using Utilities sounds like a good idea.

Active Parry sounds interesting. It should probably be a utility power, unless you require an attack against the target to make it work (and I don't think you'd want that.)

Further ideas along these lines (not all for martial-only swashbuckling:
Allow a counter-attack on a succesful parry (Higher level Version)
Counter-Attack on a failed attack (Immediate Reaction; lower level knocks prone, higher levels deal damage, or some combination)
Deflect Arrows like power
Magical Parry
Reflect Magic (usable against any attack with an energy keyword)
Spell Shield
Counterspell

Some powers can be used
 

I see two options since you want to allow this for all players at all levels, not being tied to a class or a level (as a utility power would be).

1) Grant Active Parry as new Action Points mechanic.

In addition to allowing a character to spend an action point for an extra action (PHB 286), allow the following option.

Spending An Action Point: Active Parry
* During Your Foes Turn: You can spend an action point during your opponent’s turn, but never during a surprise round.
* Active Parry: You prevent all damage from one attack made against you as an Immediate Interrupt.
* Once per Encounter: After you spend an action point, you must take a short rest (page 263) before you can spend another.

This could then be augmented with additional Action Point feats or Paragon Path Action features. Just as an example off the top of my head, something like…

DEFENSIVE PARRY
Benefit: You gain a +2 bonus to all Defenses until the end of your next turn after spending an action point to Active Parry.


2) Grant Active Parry as a free Feat Power to all characters.

ACTIVE PARRY – Feat Power
You are skilled at parrying foes’ attacks.
Encounter
Immediate Interrupt – Personal
Effect:
You prevent all damage from one attack made against you.
