AD&D1 is like a B-17

Terrible analogy guys. You can't compare technological advances in a product type (like a plane) which improve the design over time (becoming faster, lighter, more fuel efficient, more powerful, bigger pay loads, higher altitude, more manuverable etc.) to a game, because a game can be written best on its first version. Some argue that OD&D was the best of the D&D games because of its simplicity and its ability to deliver the "role play" experiance. If true, then all the advances that came afterword would be like attaching wieghts to its wings slowing it down or preventing it to fly altogether.

I think a better analogy for AD&D1 (and something fasinating to watch) would be a phenox....this game keeps popping back up from the ashes. Just think, Post Gygax (late 1E), 2E, 3E, 3.5E, a coming 4E, and everyone is still talking about Gygaxian pre-UA AD&D1. Hell, how many publishers are now making modules for 1E. If it keeps up there will be more new 1E compatable material available then ever (though at no where near the level of distribution as there are fewer players).

If we assume that higher tech planes are better, I'd agree.

I'm not assuming that in the least. I am assuming advancement in technology and sophistication. Only occasionally is the higher-tech thing is better.

"Quality" is relative: What counts as "better" depends upon what you want to do with it. If you want freewheelling barnstorming across the countryside, or advanced acrobatics, you don't do it in a stealth bomber.

Barnstorming was mostly a pre-WWII (AD&D1-comparison) activity. But let's see if I can make the analogy work.

C&C tries to give the AD&D1 experience with more modern "technology". Yes? The analogy would work better with B/ED&D -> something-modern comparison, but I don't know of any modern game system that tries to emulate the B/ED&D game.

Barnstorming with . . . what?

Unfortunately, with a quick Google image search, I couldn't find old pictures of actual barnstorming/stunt flying. I could just find images of the planes.

QFT!

This was a much better plane than the new Star Wars black stuff. The Prowler is what made any aircraft near it stealthed. It could be used today, but no, the new guys like their black batplanes. Can't let a pilot and crew do any work, got to have the computer.

The EA-6B has to be the single ugliest plane in existence, though. I was specialized in bothe EA-6B's and S-3 Vikings, and while both are ugly planes, they are very impressive to watch in the air :D.

The new Joint Strike Fighter (i believe it is X-23 designation now, but correct me if I'm wrong) is gorgeous plane, but I don't understand the U.S. and British military's fascination with V-STOL technology. V-STOL is really unpredictiable, a slow method of take-off/landing, and a colossal waste of fuel.

And one has to question such a feature when projects like the Osprey (another bird I got to turn a wrench on) are well on thier way to be phased into the fleet, while Sea Knights and f-14's (both tried and tested warmachines that are not past thier prime) are being phased out.

I'm not sure if I should be talking about planes, or D&D. ;)

I think I'll just go roll dice and try to kill demon-liches with friends, instead.

My, what a very entertaining and somewhat silly thread. I love old planes having spent tens of hours at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. I love reading Richard Bach's novels and flying biplanes and other older aircraft. I love new planes, especially the fighters and advanced technology aircraft. It is all good! As for the analogy, I have two D&D groups, one uses 1st Editon Rules, one uses 3rd Edition Rules. Both campaigns are fun and entertaining and aside from a few technical game mechanics are not all that different in execution. It is all good!

I thought the topic had switched to planes. I have to say, Quasqueton, that was a bit underhanded. Yeah, you disarmed me effectively, but to what purpose? I thought we were just discussing planes, that we had abandoned edition related arguments.

Good to know. :/
