Adamantine armor

But it's not. It's mundane armor made out of a different material.

One more reason I miss 3.PF...

Or not. It's the first item in the Magic Items A-Z list in the DMG on p.150. The header to this list says that, "A magical item's description gives the item's name, its' category, its' rarity and its' magical properties."

Therefore Adamantine Armor is medium/heavy armor of an Uncommon rarity that has the magical property of making any critical hit against the wearer a normal hit.

You may think it's just a different metal, and perhaps there are non-magical adamantine armors out there we haven't heard of yet, but the one in the DMG is most certainly magical.

I think it's stupid and I disagree with it, but I realize that that is reality. Prithee, I'm AFB and I can't remember, does this "magic item" require attunement? (another 5E wart that should've been aborted in utero)

I see some good justifications in the thread you can use to justify the effect applying to psychic damage and all the rest.

But if you don't want it to, you should feel free to change the description you give your players to read "against piercing, bludgeoning and slashing damage" or "against physical attacks" or whatever best describes how you want the armor to work.

No it does not require attunement. As far as "that is reality," your game is your reality so change it and rest happy :)

Regarding the topic of the thread though, can anyone think of an actual attack effect in the game where it makes sense that armor would protect against the effect, but not that adamantine armor would protect against a crit? I kind of think this is a non-problem.

It's not like you can't play 3.PF.

5E is NOT 3E or PF. If you want rules for every little thing, go play those games, why whine about the fact that 5E doesn't try to simulate every little nuance? By design 5E doesn't try to, doesn't want to, and never will.

No prob. Your initial question had to do with why a given magic item had the properties it does. No one says that has to be the truth in a game you run, though.

Actually, I can't. Look in my recent posting history if you wish to know why, I've already threadcrapped enough about it (I should do something about my poor <strike>Will</strike> Wisdom save to avoid doing it in the future).

No, it was a complaint that "what is" and "what I think should be" are divergent. I'm a player, not a DM, so I just have to live with it or convince my DM that it should be otherwise.
