Adding a template

When a creature/PC adds a template with a different HD numbers (say d8's to d12's) how are HP calculated? Do you reroll? HP stays the same but adjusted for any change in stat and future rolls are made with the new dice? How does this work exactly?

Thanks.

I reroll.

I could see an argument for adding the average difference- i.e. if you're going from d8 to d12, add 2 hp/HD to the creature's hps. But those are the same kind of arguments that lead to generating pcs with point buy, which (while there's nothing wrong with point buy, per se) is totally not my thing.

More Info

Well, maybe I should add a bit more information to this. The next campaign I am planning on running contains a player that will be playing the True Necromancer prestige class. His idol is Azlan (the lich from Greyhawk/Ravenloft) and this campaign is going to have an evil bent to it. His goal at higher level is to become a lich and should this come to pass I am unsure of how his HP's change since they become d12's. There must be rule somewhere stating how a change in HD is handled. Any references would greatly be appreciated.

In addition to the above, the player also wants to design a corpse using the corpsecrafter feat from Libris Mortis to enhance a body that he can take over thus giving himself a bonus to str and hp. Anybody see any rules issue with this?

Thanks again.

The answer is that "It depends."

In the case of monsters and NPCs, they generally get the average of each hit dice, therefore a change in hit dice size causes them to gain Total Hit Dice * the change in Average hit points.

PCs (and important NPCs), however, generally get max hit points at first level and then roll thereafter. In such a case, you'd likely re-roll most of your hit points.

Some games have different rules, either giving automatic max HP, average of hit dice rounded up, etc. In such cases, just revise the player's hit points appropriately.

Note that some templates say things like, "Hit dice changes to d8, but don't reroll hitpoints," like the Celestial template:

SRD said:
A celestial creature uses all the base creature’s statistics and abilities except as noted here. Do not recalculate the creature’s Hit Dice, base attack bonus, saves, or skill points if its type changes.

It no longer has the old hit dice, it has the new ones, so take away all the old hit dice and replace with the new ones, which means re-roll hit points when he becomes a lich.

Hyp? Anyone else? Bhueler?
In the absense of Hyp, I can p/b feild this one.
When his Hit Dice change to D12 they are rerolled. Keep in mind that because undead have no Con score he does not gain any Con bonus per level to HP.
Edit:
Ok, I hadn't thought this through as well as I should have.
to reference srd. the base creature here is human which does not have an enharent base attack, HD etc. I know there are only a few that change Hit Dice from levels. The Vampire Templet is an example, However I'm not sure about the lich templet. If it says it changes from class levels then all HD are recalculated. If it doesn't say it replaces class levels then the only thing that will change is that he will no longer get a Con bonus/level to HP(just subtract con bonus*level from total HP). I believe my first inclination was correct (that it does replace class levels,) ifso then this is much easier.

You can go the Savage Species rout when it comes to the big HD and hp change:
First no longer having a Con. the character loses any Con bonus or penalty to hit points, saving throws, and skills.

When one becomes a lich all there HD becomes d12s, and rather then rerolling all the characters HD again just add +4hp/d4 that they may have had, +3hp/d6, +2/d8 and 1hp/d10 and that should make the character 100% by the rules.

"In addition to the above, the player also wants to design a corpse using the corpsecrafter feat from Libris Mortis to enhance a body that he can take over thus giving himself a bonus to str and hp. Anybody see any rules issue with this?"

If I had a player that wanted to do that I might even alow them to add the feat benefits too there own body as they complete the magics that make them a lich in the first place, but thats just me. If they wanted to change bodys after the fact of becoming a lich I don' believe I would allow that, but if they get a nice healthy living body before becoming a lich well thats another story. hehehe
