Adkison's Gen Con report

Internet porn, or the artwork for an upcoming Avalanche Press product? :D

I truly believe that Peter Adkison cares about gamers and wants GenCon to be an extremely successful, well-loved event in gaming.

I also believe that Peter Adkison is a business man. The first few years of any business are crucial. If GenCon UK was just going to be a money sink for him for the next few years...well, like it or not, you can't afford that in a new business.

With time and with success I bet we'll see the triumphant return of GenCon Europe. But only when it's feasible from a business standpoint.

You know, all of this reminds me of this great job I had. Free snacks, free soda and lunch was on the company every day, we ordered from local takeout places. We closed the phones down an hour a day and had LAN parties for that hour. We had great perks and benefits, extremely flexible schedules, tons of time off. We went to Cons and played games on company time. Lots of playtesting and the like. It was great...right up until they went under. To this day, I wish they had kept a few of their perks and used that money to stay in business.

I learned my lesson the hard way.

If Peter Adkison needs to hold off on hosting GenCon Europe until he can afford it...then I applaud him for having the guts to do what was needed.

What, my fist ain't so mighty anymore?!? Oh how the mighty fists are fallen! ;)

Best line of the day, by the way. I got a good laugh; thanks.

Do not fret... Gen Con UK will be back in 2004 :-)

I'm not going to say any more just yet... But will keep folks posted as things develop.

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal.

Ooh sounds interesting.... I really hope so. Adkison said he wasn't planning it for 2005 so I'm guessing some folks are planning to pick up this license deal he's offering. What gets me is what happens to these folks if Adkison does decide to return to Europe.

Quoted from Peter Adkinson's Letter

(4) The ATMs ran out of cash a lot and didn't get refilled as promptly as they should have been. This seems like a small issue, but if gamers can't get money, they can't spend money, which means they don't get in as much shopping as they'd like and the exhibitors don't get the sales they'd like, which is bad all the way around.

I wasn't at Gen Con but as a frequent traveller I'd like to point out that ATMs running out of money can have far more frustrating effects for visitors/gamers than not being able to buy games. People who travel a long distance (especially international travellers) are cut off from other money sources and may be dependant on ATMs to get money for living expenses.

Larger open gaming room.

The open gaming room (140) was very small and out of the way. perhaps make it a bit larger next year?

Pre-print generic tickets and badges, hit the badges barcode when activiated and let the people write their own names on the cards. Perhaps sell the generic tickets in lots of 5 and 10 at a minor discount instead of only as 1's so people are more inclined to get them faster.

Scantron or have some other faster method for event ticket registration.
