D&D 5E Advanced D&D or "what to minimally fix in 5E?"

This thread is right up my alley. I had recently downloaded the SRD, and at 400+ pages, my initial thought was "My god, why does it need to be so long?" Of course, it has all the monsters and magic items, which explains a good chunk of that bloat. But still. I wanted desperately to see how much I could condense it.

Needless to say, I failed that save, and managed to squeeze about 60+ pages (ability scores, backgrounds, races, languages and some other stuff) into literally 3 pages. I stopped at classes, because that will be quite a bit more complex. I'm not about to reduce classes into a point-based system. That sounds like madness.

Also, my plan was to cap levels at 12, because realistically, most games never go past that point anyway, and it seems like a good place to stop. Cuts out all the crazy spells, too.

Behold - 5e, simplified.

I was considering make a thread, asking if anyone actively plays with the DnDNext playtest rules- there were many iterations, and some had some cool ideas in them. I recently came across what AFAIK is the complete collection of all of the playtest PDFs.

I'm wondering if there are things to look to in those old playtest iterations that might make a better 5e.

I lowkey love this SO much. I still have friends that sadly only play 5e, but I can't summon the will to run it for them anymore. I've been searching everywhere for a "sensible" 5e (killing any and all sacred cows in service of ease-of-use) and this is the best attempt I've seen in a while. Thanks for sharing!

Like most things, the solution is a big book with hundreds of feats in it.

You can use the feats to rewrite the game like we're actually trying to do on a per-character level.

That way you can honestly say you haven't touched the core game while actually applying the deep, systematic fixes people basically want to apply to 5e but don't want to get accused of not playing 5e over.
this.

characters need more feat slots and less "take it or leave it" abilities granted by class.
pick abilities that you want to have.

5e requires much polish...the best improvements I've seen are those which convert it into a simpler game where you can build the detail/nuance into the equipment.
Evolving 5e requires a lot of work and you inevitably have to slay a few sacred cows, otherwise you sit with gremlins/imperfections in the system. IMO.

Wow. So how are the classes going?
