"Retaliate, I am sure. The amulet is a thing of great value. More than he even knows, I am sure. Also, It is the symbol of the Baron's position. Of a way to find me, that I do not know. I doubt that family knows where mine has gone. We are all but forgotton there, I would assume.

Anton:

You notice a small human boy standing in the middle of the road ahead, deep in the trees. He is standing underneath a large tree limb that overhangs the road. There is a crouching adult figure on the limb near to the tree, looking your way. There is a smaller figure, probably another child, above that one on another limb, also crouching.

You see a small human boy standing in the middle of the road ahead, quite a bit of distence after the road enters the trees.

Hanging in there. Better than the alternative.
Anton leans over to Artemis in a hushed voice, "Do you see what I see? If we stop for the boy, it might be wise for you to be the one to speak with the boy while I watch the other two to cover for you."

OOC: How far away is the boy?

Dex:
[sblock]I'm not entirely sure what the top of this wagon looks like. If the archers who'd be on top of this thing would have cover, I'd like to duck down behind it and slip my bow off of my back. Would that be a hide check or is there just not enough space to do that?[/sblock]

OOC: Roughly 250feet. 100 past the tree line of the meadow.

Ant:

Wagon: The top of the wagon is ten feet wide and 30 feet long. The bench takes the first two squars and the first rampart provides 1/2 cover for medium creatures the next four back. The next ten feet is not ramparted. There is a rear rampart with the same cover specifications for the rear two squars. Yes, use a hide check. You can take ten, but not twenty. The cover offers you no bonus to this since the two in the tree are actually at greater elevation than you are. Also, if ranged attacks come from the tree. The cover is reduced to 1/4 for medium creatures.

[sblock]Not going to take 10 -- when we're 100' away I'm going to Hide and slide off my bow, to ready it. Then, I'll try to hold it pretty low (below the rampart, hopefully out of sight) so I don't alert anyone. My intent is not to attack anyone but to protect whomever goes to talk to the boy, so I don't want to look offensive.

[sblock]"When we were forced to leave our land, the Baron to be took the amulet from my great grandfather and claimed it as his own. My great grandfather, injured from battle, was too weak to resist the new Baron."

Charles's eyes narrow and his hands close into fist. "The family that now holds domain over what use to be ours passes down that amulet just as mine did. They did it to mock my family name in front of those who once served us. Now it is just a tradition."

--------

"So, what was at first a simple escort for a merchant has become a scheme to steal an heirloom from a family that has held it for two centuries, am I right?"

--------

Anton scratches his head, "Wait, what is that? I was to understand that the scheme is to steal the heirlom for the family that held it for two centuries. The current owners have had it for maybe a generation, no? Am I mistaken, Charles?"

--------

Charles nods to Anton. "You are correct."

--------

Is Charles referring to Anton's statement about the passage of time? Because the Medibarian War occurred 200 years ago, and assuming that's when the amulet was taken, it's been passed through the Baron's family for that long. Right?[/sblock]

Fimble wakes up from his brooding mood. "Hmph... I must say, all this talk about bloodshed and whatnot, all for this little trinket? If Master Charles is indeed going to retrieve this amulet while we are protecting his cargo, I believe he should do it himself. I, for one, did not sign up to become involved in a family feud." He sighs and looks resignedly at Charles. "I did, however, sign up to protect the cargo in your wagon, and that I shall do. I can't say that I agree with your goal, though I know much about familial pride. And for that, I respect you. I do wish that you would reconsider your actions, though. The baron who now holds your heirloom is not the baron who did two centuries ago. Perhaps a peaceful bargain could be struck, and you could even end all enmity between your two houses... Just a thought. Act as you feel is best, Master Charles." The little gnome turns about again to look at the meadow the wagon is passing through

OOC:
[sblock]That's a good point. Charles never says that amulet was taken during the war, though, just that his great grandfather was part of an important battle during the war in which they were dishonored. I think the facts boil down to: Charles' family had the heirloom. The current family stole it from Charles' family. Charles wants it back. The times seem to be odd, though.[/sblock]

Raena Celeste Everglade, Halfling Rogue

Little Raena grins at Fimble and his somber attitude. "Oh, come on, old fogey. You know it would be fun to sneak in that guy's house and take his stuff!" She turns to Charles and bows deeply. "Master Charles, you have the services of Raena the Thief at your disposal for whatever the reason." She smiles wryly over her shoulder at Fimble. Then she sticks out her tongue. Giggling she hops over to where he is to join him at the rail of the wagon.
