I guess my method is based on the idea that my planning for a session is more a mix-matched collection of characters with different motivations and locations. That and a few plot hooks to start it all off. The characters with motivations determine the nature of the encounter (to a point) and how the story unfolds determines the locations. So railroading is really impossible.
