(Adventure) The Island of Varras'zul (Manzanita Judging) (Concluded)

Feeling rather secure that the dark area doesn't contain any major threat at the moment, Ogrin decides to have a deeper "look" inside it.

"While he's busy with the runes, I'll search the area around the piedestal. There might be other things strewn about it which a casual observer might miss. I don't see much in the dark, but I have a keen nose for finding things.

Nezrak, feel free to speak aloud while you're examining those runes; your voice should help me keep track of where I am."

OOC: Search +6, penalty -4 for being blind. I doubt I'll be allowed to take 20...?

"I'll help Ogrin." Rillian moves to aid Ogrin.

/ooc Why not take 20, thats only 3 mins, while the big brains do their thinking/translating.

oog: It's not complete darkness, only shadowy illumination (as produced by the nerfed Darkness 3.5 spell). So, you guys can still see sillouettes as long as you have a light source (whose illumination is dimmed by the spell).

So, Ogrin can take 20 on search with no problem.

oog2: Decipher Script however allows no retries. So, no take 20 though you could take 10 if you wanted. But as per your request, I rolled instead

Nezrak:

[sblock]Using his knowledge of existing, current languages, Nezrak set himself to work on the runes. After a minute or so of careful reading and interpretation, he deciphered the gist of the runes' message.

The runes warned Nezrak against opening the door, stating that only the pure of purpose and strong of heart can remove the seals that bound it shut. The runes make little mention of what lay beyond the giant metal double doors, except that it was something powerful and otherworldly. [/sblock]

Scun and Rillian:

[sblock]Staying inside the Darkness just feels wrong for the both of you. It is an unnerving sensation, enough to make the hairs upon the back of your neck stand on end.[/sblock]

Ogrin:

[sblock] Ogrin searched the platform high and low. However, beyond the runes and the platfrom's unusual construction, there was nothing else of significance to be found here.[/sblock]

As all the searching and deciphering is going on around him, Rasereit paces back and forth, looking around for danger. Finally his short patience is at its end. "Bloody... Alrigh', that's it. Ah want to do somethin'! We've got a door over there," he points over behind the blackness, "and a door over there." he points at the door near where they came in. "Or, what the heck, we could take a look in that big metal 'un over there. Which one will it be boys an' girls?"

"Well, from what I can gather, these runes basically say "Don't open the friggin' doors!". There's supposed to be something bad in the other side of those large iron doors. And the usual babble about someone pure etc. being able to open the doors. Not very helpful considering we're probably going to want to open them anyway. But I say let's check the open doorway first. The big metal one is probably locked and barred, and the smaller metal one is probably trapped.", Nezrak says after he finishes with the runes and gets out of the darkness.

Scun nods. "I agree with Nezrak. Let's check out the least dangerous place first and work our way up."

Scun switches out his spear for his sickle, makes sure his shield is on tight, and gets ready to check out the open doorway.

"Don't forget, these people might've had a different opinion what 'pure' means... like, having tentacles and a toothy maw.

"I'd say the trapped door guards something valu... I mean, important. I'm inclined to go that way. The big doors look like they might contain something we don't want to disturb unless absolutely necessary, so let's leave them till last, after the stone door."

Beyond the stone door was a room filled with cages. They varied in size and material. Some of these cages were open, including the biggest of them about 10 feet in length, width and height. The others were permanently shut by locks, wards and the passing of time. A few of the closed cages contained skeletons or carapaces of creatures both alien and horrific to behold.

It should be noted that the western end of the room opened into the water that surrounded the rubble where the centipedes laired. A swift search yielded nothing of importance, though opening some of the locked cages might bear interesting fruit...or deadly combat.

Scun feels his blood pumping faster as Razh kicks in the door. Excited, he rushes over to back him up and arrives to see the cages. He sniffs the air and looks for signs of life or habitation. (for instance food or droppings in the cages, movement)
