Adventure: The Power of Knowledge (DM: Fragsie, Judge: TwoHeadsBarking)

Mikara nods at Tomalak when he mentions getting the girls to safety.

"I think that is the best idea. You get the girls to safety, and I will go scout out the temple while the others catch up with me. If we encounter the jerks who did this, then we will take them down as quickly as we can. If you happen to catch up in time, you can play clean up."

Mikara smiles wickedly, winking at Andrec and playfully ribbing him at the mention of him playing clean up.

"Good luck, and see you soon!"

With that, Mikara looks at each of the other party members and makes sure that they are aware of the plan before she jets off to the temple, dashing from shadow to shadow as she goes.

[sblock=Stealth] Perception DC of 29 to spot Mikara as she travels to the temple. Hrmmm... less than 30, she must be getting cocky ;) [/sblock]

"Th..th..thank you sir, I couldn't carry her on my own, I tried, but I couldn't." The young girls stares up into Andrecs face, her worried eyes show a glimmer of hope at having found someone who would help. "I'll take you back to the den; Mam'll know what to do 'cos she looks after us, I'll show you the way."

She waits for Andrec to almost effortlessly and gently lift her friend off the floor. Then, after the rest of the group have departed she leads Andrec through a maze of dark, muddy alleys. At one point she turns to the warlord and raises her tiny finger to her lips indicating that they should be quiet as they stole through the stableyard of a racous, dingy tavern.
Eventually the three of them arrive at their destination. Within a small patch of overgrown wildland that was probably once a rather attractive town garden, the girl leads Andrec to a half ruined house, the building bears the black weathered scars of a thatch fire across the entire upper floor, it's roof bare and the wind howling through shutterless windows. The windows of the ground floor however cast out flickering candlelight onto the untended garden.

The girl runs ahead and lets herself in through the front door, all the while shouting; "Mam, Mam, I found her, I found her!"

A few seconds later a torrent of grubby children pour out of the open doorway and surround Andrec nearly knocking him off his feet, cheers and excited squeals soon turn to mutters and worried looks when they notice what condition Lil is in. The children are swiftly followed by an old human woman. Dispite her obvious age, there is an energy to her pace that you would liken to that of a younger woman. She flaps at the heads of the children with a hankerchief as she walks toward Andrec and one by one they peel off from the mob and go back into the house.

The woman eyes Andrecs armour and weapon as she carefully takes the child from him, "I Thankee young sir, 'twas very noble o' yee to bring the littl'un back to us, but we won't be wantin' any trouble, speshly not in front o' the Kiddies. If you can wait a little while I can give you some coin by way of sayin' thanks, an there won't be no need for you to look for nothin'. How's that sound?"

She smiles widely at the warlord, but her fear shows through it. Andrec deduces that this house probably get unwanted visitors occasionally, the kind that don't leave nicely when asked.

On the other side of the district, a sneaky ashen skinned stalker with very pointy ears carefully peers around the corner of a building that she is hugging with her back. She takes care not to move out of the shadows as her piercing eyes carefully watch a laden stretcher being carried out of the shrine by two thuggish looking men. Behind them a tall, muscular man exits the shrine; his face contorted in rage, looks up into the sky and screams;

"Vengeance!!"

The two men carrying the stretcher hurry off around a corner, a few seconds later the man that had screamed brings his gaze back down to ground and stalks off after them just as Ceryx, Skalisss, Shane and Growl arrive behind Mikara.

Skalisss and the others come up behind Mikara, and see a brooding figure leave the Tempe.

"Can you follow him Mikara? We ssshould wait for Andrec here. Otherwissse he will never find usss. Return when you know where their dessstination isss. We can surprissse them there."

Mikara grins and nods as Skalisss.

"I will be like their own shadows. I'll come back when I know more."

Slinking along the wall, Mikara's form suddenly fades from view.

[sblock=Stealth] Mikara will use her shade form power so that she can slink from one pocket of shadow to another. She tries her best to keep up to the group while maintining a hidden status.

She rolls a Stealth check of 30 if she only has to move along at 4 squares per round (2 squares per move action), or a check of 25 if she has to move faster than 4 squares per round to keep up. [/sblock]

Stammering a little in surprise at the perceived threat (he still thinks of himself as a desk jockey, despite his recent adventures), Andrec says "Ma'am, I urge you to keep the children close for a few days. There's something dangerous going on - more so than usual. Try not to let them wander far. Are any others missing?"
After getting her response, he will inform her that agents working for the city are taking care of the problem, and will have it taken care of in a few days. He will also assure her that the girl is, to his understanding, also going to get better soon - though she'll need rest and may not wake for a few days.

Andrec will, of course, refuse any money offered, and explain that he works for the city. (Andrec's not foolish enough to believe most of the city's bureaucracy cares about people in the harder parrts of town, but Andrec's not most)

Mikara carefully turns the corner into the alley where the men had gone and is just in time to see the taller one vanish through what looks to be a tear in reality. A vertical rip in existence that glows faintly purple. After a few seconds the tear begins to knit itself back together. Mikara has but a moment to decide whether to follow or not before the option is gone.

A strange mixture of emotions play across the old woman's face when Andrec refuses her offer of coins. She regards him anew, and the fear behind her eyes begins to recede, "My, well I ain't never met a guardsman as kind as you young sir, you seem t'be right out o' a fey tale! There are three others missing, all boys that usually go out together, if'n you could help find them I would be so grateful young sir. But if they're all like little Lil ere, I won't be able to care for 'em as well as look after t'others. If that were the case I would impose upon you again sir, to take 'em to somewhere in the mornin where they can be look for properly, like the temple or somewhere?"

Without hesitating, Mikara dashes through the purple tear with her weapon drawn. When she finds herself where ever it is she finds herself, she prepares for a hasty battle if it is imminent, or attempts to find something that will shield her enemies view of her. The others may not be with her, but she had a job to do. Hesitation would not solve their problems.

Andrec tells the woman he will be back as soon as he has news, and after getting the names and descriptions of the boys, makes haste back to the shrine.

As Mikara leaps through the portal she feels her constituant parts dissasembling themselves. Though this doesn't hurt as she might have expected, instead her consciousness seems strangely removed from her body, though still aware of it. This strange, disconcerting feeling continues for what seems like quite a while, she feels as though her being is floating through a tunnel that bores the space between existence, and she is sure that beyond the tunnel there are many 'somethings' eyeing her hungrily. Dispite all her assassin's training and willfullness, the fear instilled in her by these otherworldly presences sinks deep into her soul, and she all of a sudden knows that this fear will stay with her for the rest of her life. Just as she is starting to think that maybe she would float like this forever, she begins to feel her body reassembling itself, sensations take on a more physical form and then she bursts forth from nothingness into a large cavern.

With weapon drawn, the drow girl lands firmly on her feet in a circle of purple glowing runes that have been etched into the stone floor, she is a few paces behind the back of the tall man she had followed through the portal. The cavern she stands in is well lit by a number of torches that have been hastily pittoned to the walls and a number of stalagmites. The air is damp and heavy and carries the unpleasant stench of sewage, yet the puddles and rivulets that run here and there about the chamber seem clean and fresh. In the distance excavation is clearly ongoing, a large group of men are picking away at one particular section of the cave wall and a large pile of rubble to one side of where they toil indicates that they have been at it for a while now.

The man Mikara followed barks at his companions with the stretcher, "Take my brother to the Runelord, quickly!"
Grief is heavy in the mans voice and as the wouldbe pall bearers hurry off down a tunnel his shoulder hunch and he passes his hand over his face. Mikara, having taken in her surroundings moves as quickly and quietly as possible behind a large stalagmite, but unfortunately she isn't quick enough. The most beautiful human woman Mikara has ever seen walks into view surrounded by an assortment of men, some of whom wear the uniform of the city guard. Her image is so heavenly that Mikara can't help but stand and stare at her as she speaks, "I see you have found your brother Kyvan, it is a pi... Behind you, you have been followed you dunce!"
The woman's voice sounds like birdsong to Mikara, like silk and honey. She stands dumbfounded for a second, but comes back to her sences when the woman clicks her fingers and all the men who surround her draw their weapons, she calls over to the men digging at the end of the cavern and they turn to face Mikara hefting their pick-axes. Kyvan whips round and growls at Mikara, "I want her alive, I've questions to ask." He commands.
"Hmmm... And she is quite a beauty too, yes keep her alive, for me." The woman adds.
Her entourage of men fawn over her with assurances, "Anything for you mistress." "Compared to you she's as ugly as an old boot mistress."

[sblock=Kalidrev]Ok, so this was a totally unexpected course of action, you've managed to end up in the bad guys lair one or two levels early, and on your own! But, it's cinematic so I'm going with it :)
It will take ages and just be a bit of a grindfest to go through a combat encounter that mikara cannot feasibly win, so if you would like to make 10 attack rolls all at once, and then use those results to give you and idea of how well mikara fights against these unsurmountable oddsdescribe the combat cinematically. Kyvan and the woman will stand back and let their grunts do the work (we're talking about 20 men, half of which will have had combat training of some sort), eventually Mikara will be knocked out, if you end your description there, I will take over for the next scene.[/sblock]
