And away we go...

With the group on board and anxious to go, Glasur removes the final rope and the fish struggle against the current. The going is fairly difficult, but the orc controls the beasts with expert skill. They pull with seemingly unceasing strength all day and as nightfall begins to descend, the captain looks for a safe shore for the night. He pulls up to the edge of a patch of dry land, mooring the boat. "Well, you can sleep in the boat or on the land, either way we gotta rest and so do my girls" the orc says as he unstraps the fish from the ropes and they quickly disappear into the dark waters, "Don't worry, they'll be back, got'em trained good." he says.

Ok, so what is the watch order for the night? Also, it'll take a few more days so we can use the same order for each night. [/sblock]

[sblock=ooc] Kortauhk isn't exactly the most perceptive creature abound (only a +2 perception... he's no Lan, that's for sure, lol) so we may want to have watch in pairs. If need be, Kortauhk will go on two shifts to cover the lack of a 6th person. [/sblock]

"I suggest that we have two people on watch at all times while everyone else rests on the boat. One should be on shore hidden in the direction of the shore, but easily visible from the boat. The other on the boat where he or she can see the one on shore. We should be able to set up a blind on shore so that the one on shore can look out without being seen too easily. The ones on shore should be fighters such as Val, Feall, and Kortauhk. The ones on the boat, River, myself and Pok. I doubt we will be attacked from the water without Glasur's fish making a ruckus, so the ones in the boat should be ok. Glasur can also take a watch if he wants."

[sblock=OOC]If we build a blind, it should be able to provide superior cover and/or total concealment.[/sblock]

"Yeah, I can take a watch, got me some good eyes after years along this route. You're right about my girls, they won't let nobody sneak up that way" Glasur offers.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a blind? [/sblock]

A hiding place sometimes used by hunters. One builds it with branches or grasses or whatever is available. It can even be done by not changing anything (i.e. finding the perfect place to hide). There is usually a small hole or slit in it so that the hunter gets a clear view of the area while game can at most only see the small dark hole. In our case, we only need a "wall" that looks like (or are) bushes or some such in one direction. A real blind is sometimes 360 where the hunter is completely hidden in all directions. Duck hunters do it on the ground since they are firing up. Deer hunters do it in trees with stands, but since deer tend to not look up, it's not as necessary to be totally hidden.

Thanks KD. Interesting...

Unless anyone objects we'll continue on shortly with the proposed plan.

Watch order:
1st: Korthauk & Pok
2nd: Shava & Feall (darkest time so darkvision would be very useful)
3rd: Val, River & Glasur
[/sblock]

Over the next two days, the swamp begins to give way to a more stable ground and forest. Then ahead, you see the sky darkening beyond the bend of the river, a heavy plume of gray-black smoke twisting on the wind.

Glasur sees the smoke and calls up

"There’s a village a mile up," the orc rumbles,'“Or there was a village, by the look of it." he adds with a sigh.

"We should probably check this out via the land route. Glasur should be able to drop us off on this side of the bend and while we walk to the village, he can move back away from it and away from shore as well where it is safer. We wouldn't want anything to happen to the boat. This should only take a few hours to check out at most." Sheeva comments.
