I have to say that the dynamic weapon has got to be one of my favorites so far.

Healing potions using up surges I can understand. But...daily powers? Why?

Well, it's elixirs, but as Owen said up above, it's for balance reasons. If you mean "why" as in, "Why does the fantasy world work this way?" then I don't think 4e is going to attempt to answer that.

Owen, I am curious. When you say "...in 4e it's a lot harder to get 'free' power boosts, even with items," what do you mean by 'free'?

There's still the gold cost of the item and the opportunity cost of the activation. I'm guessing you are taking free to mean, "No cost other than gold, which is at the mercy of the DM, and a standard action." Back when I was also writing for WOTC - we share a design credit on Magic Item Compendium - I did not consider items to be free.

Glad to see new versions of old favorites in there (like the sunblade). I was hoping to see the folding boat (and not just have the feather boat as the sole option).

Really like the Upgrade an Item rules (rather than just having to Disenchant then re Enchant), and the Upgrading an Item as Treasure. Seems like a nice way to incorporate that mystical & always used item that grows in strength along with its wielder (without having to lose XP and potential other class abilities for it).

I got my copy yesterday from Amazon, and while I've only really skimmed it, I was disappointed by the lack of a couple things. I was really hoping for more "neat" magic items like the Rod of Lordly Might. Also, didn't the Warforged article say to see this book for rules for intelligent magic items?

Other than that, I enjoyed what I've seen so far of the book...

Well, it is an upcoming Dragon article. I imagine it got cut in editing and layout and they decided to publish it through the DDI.

Does anyone know of a shield in 4E that acts like an animated shield in 3.x? I was just asking my players to update their item wish lists, and one of them was disappointed that nothing like that was to be found in the Adventurer's Vault (or PHB for that matter).

I really, really hope that there is no animated shield. It's one of the most unbalancing items in 3e.
