Advice on a one horror rpg's

First Post
Although our group loves 3E we need a break from the system before we burn out on it. I am looking to run a short game with a horror theme, not using any D20 system. I know All Flesh Must Be Eaten is available, what is it like, how does it play. Or are there any other similar types of game available.

Thx

Bob

How about 2E Ravenloft :D ? There is also the old school Chaosium (sp?) system for Call of Cthullu. I've looked into All Flesh Must Be Eaten, but I've not gotten into it. One of my fav alternate RPG system's is West End Games D6 system. Talk about super simple to use and learn. They used to do Star Wars before they went belly up. BUT there is a general d6 sourcebook that they produced that tells you how to design campaigns in all kinds of era's. I recommend looking into that. I'm also recently getting into Exalted. While that's not a horror game by any means (since you're playing a demi-god), White Wolf who makes it, also makes horror games. They're d10 system seems pretty good so far, but you wind up having to use a ton of dice. They do Vampire the Masquerade and Werewolf, but I don't know too much about those. Hope this helps!

Vampire is very cool, very gothic and very story based. You can go for ages without rolling a single die. The background is quite good also. Personally, I'd go for Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu, nothing better than taking on the Great Old Ones! There is more die rolling in CoC too, if that's what your players are into.

Goodluck.

I'd suggest Unkown Armies... it can handle horror just fine, and it's a great system overall, and the best insanity/stress/fear system I've ever seen. Be warned, though... It's a bit on the 'mature' side.

I've played a short campaign of All Flesh Must Be Eaten. It was okay, but I felt that the clunkiness of the system overshadowed the fun we were having. But this was the first campaign we had played, so we were a little unfamiliar with the rules. The Buffy RPG uses the same system, I believe, but it may be more streamlined.

Little Fears is cool, if you get the chance to try it out.

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is a cool game who's system is weak & can be better done in the Call of Cthulhu or White Wolf system.

I highly suggest running Chaosium Call of Cthulhu, & I wouldn't exactly call Vampire a horror game.

I wouldn't exactly call Vampire a horror game.

Really? Which version are you playing?

Sure, you can ignore the horror aspects and focus on politics, or the metaplot, or what have you. But Vampire is very much a horror game unless the players choose to ignore those aspects of it.

Frankly, I can't recommend it highly enough; it's my second favorite RPG ever, behind D&D.

And for the record, it was so before I began writing for it, so no, I'm not speaking from any "company loyalty."

Games like Call of Cthulhu, Witchcraft, & other similar games all deal with aspects of the huge unknown, while only having very limited knowledge & resources to combat these things.

Vampire just doesn't seem to have any really grave elements of what I see as fear. Sure you have the alien & seemingly supreme nature of the Antidelluvians awakening, but it just doesn't seem that much like horror.

I'm not exactly certain, but Vampire just doesn't feel like horror to me. You are playing one of the monsters you should be afraid of, you're playing the very thing that should be mysterious & frightening, & although a cool game, it just doesn't seem that horrifying to me.
