advice on playing dumb

Try to do and say lots of dumb things - so long as they're fun for everybody. Using "I'm dumb" as an excuse to be a jackhole is still being a jackhole.
that's why i'm asking advice. hey, just for a little insight, anyone want to take a crack at Rain Man's mental stats?

also, there's something i forgot to mention about this character: he's a coward. through a series of bad experiences early in life, he's now afraid of just about everything. but that mentality doesn't really fit with such a low INT, does it? what a dilemma...

Actually I was about to recommend either a level of distrust in everyone and everything, or an overabundance of trust in everyone or everything. If you are playing a bit of cowardice (and reluctance to go adventuring??) then I would definitely play up the mistrust and not believing just everything that he hears or is told. His low intelligence means slow processing, and could mean that any conclusion would take a lot of bashing around in his limited cranium. So he doesn't accept things just as it comes, he has to take the time to fit everything he experiences into a very small set of round and square holes that he's familiar with.

I think it can fit just fine. The low Int means he'll often be scared of threats that don't really exist or will exaggerate the threats that do. That's all.

Morgan: Why is there yogurt in this hat?

Fry: I can explain that. It used to be milk, and well, time makes fools of us all.

---

Leela: 'What was that?'

Fry: 'Maybe we hit a space cow'

---

Fry: 'Wow, there's a million aliens, i've never seen anything so mindblowing.....Oooh, a reception table with muffins!'

---

Leela: 'Ok, if everyones finished being stupid'

Fry: 'I had more, but go on'

---

Fry: 'Alright bird, you thought you could beat me in a game of wits. Well you just met your equal.'

---

Fry: 'There, finished'

Leela: 'Wouldn't it work better if the wheels were round?'

Fry: 'It's my invention we do it my way!'

Some random thoughts:

- Take everything he hears literally. Sarcasm is far too complex for this guy. If anything, he might just see it as lying.

- Even discussions of future possibilities are difficult, so if someone in the party is saying 'we could kick in the door & kill them all', he might just walk off to do that; alternatively, he might have learned not to take any action until specifically told by 'the smart people' to do so.

- Thought the WIS & CHA scores could temper this, consider saying whatever he thinks whenever he things it. If he knows the duke is lying, he might just say 'He's lying to us' right then. Diplomacy may be a CHA-based skill, but recognizing the consequences of actions falls more into INT, IMO.

- I'd consider having one person in the group that he looks to for leadership, relying on them a great deal to explain the things that he can't handle.

I once played a one shot BD&D game with a Fighter that had 18 Str and 3 Int. My DM was really getting ticked at me by the end of the adventure. :)
